Just found this study interesting. Many of their conclusions makes sense

While big-box retailers might offer the lowest prices, they also may be altering a community's social and economic fabric enough to promote the creation of hate groups, new research shows.

The amount of Wal-Mart stores in a county was more statistically significant than other factors commonly regarded as important to hate group participation, such as the unemployment rate, high crime rates and low education, the research found.

A key factor is that many local merchants are forced out of business after finding it difficult to compete against large retailers, according to the study.
Local business owners are typically members of community and civic groups, such as the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, which help establish programs promoting civic engagement and fostering community values. Goetz said losing members of such groups may cause a drop in community cohesion.

What came first, the chicken or the egg? Wal-Mart isn't going somewhere where the demographics doesn't fit their clientele.

Interesting. I would guess that hate groups are naturally most popular among the lower class/poor demographics. Wal-Mart appeals to the poor more than it does the rich, thus poor counties with hate groups likely have more Wal-Marts.

I love Wal-Mart. Keep in mind, Wal-Mart Utah, is nowhere near the same thing as Wal-Mart Tennessee.

The phraseology of "tied to" and "linked to" is too strong for the conclusion. It makes it sound as if big box stores are actively promoting or coordinating with hate groups.

Read the first comment under the article....he says exactly what any one with common sense should think when they see a "study" like this.

I believe what they're getting at it that WM/HD/etc coming in and driving out the smaller stores harms the community feel of many places. Like the article said, you're probably less likely to steal from a place if the owner lives down the street

could not get the funding if they did not exaggerate the issue......"big box BAD, small business GOOD"

I've actually seen a lot of economic growth around Wal-Marts. When one gets built, a lot more shops and restaurants come with it. That would cause an increase in population and service jobs.

The Hixson area in Chattanooga comes to mind. Of course there was already a Wal-Mart and stores, but it caused a buildup in a different area.

but what was that area before?

I would guess the addition of a WM to a more affluent area would do less damage than it would in a poorer one

I saw what became of a small town about 20 minutes from where I grew up after walmart set up shop. Small businesses shut down and didn't regenerate to nearly the same degree. Crime went up and the place turned to crap.

And walmart Utah is no where near Walmart Cool Spings or Walmart Hendersonville.

But no matter where they are they still suck.

Wow, that's crazy.

My folks live in Cedar City, UT. The Super Wal-Mart got put in a decade ago, and they do more business than 99% of Wal-Marts. It's like the #2 or #3 employer in the county. The Wal-Mart was built on the south side of town where there was nothing, and now the area is booming.

I do have one big gripe, though....the city gave them big tax breaks to build the supercenter.

Huh? I didn't comment on crime, but I'd guess there's low-levels of crime in Iron County, UT because virtually everybody owns a gun.

what I love is seeing walmarts right across the road from sams club.

both stores are almost identical in all aspects but attract totally different customers.

Apparently, I live in a crime riddled area and didn't know it. If I go North, South or East, there are 7 Wal Mart Supercenters or WM Neighborhood Markets within 7 miles.

I am really confused. What are the hate groups? What do they consider a hate group?
