After today game I looked up some info on the future of the o-line and found that after this year we will have 13 guys with 3 or more years to play. I also noticed that we lose 7 of 10 2 deep this year. Some of you have better info on this than me so I was hoping that maybe more light could be shed on this topic because right now it seem to be a position of concern. Also the number 13 is where it stand as of right now it is subject to change.

I’m more concerned with the defense. I feel we got too much talent and depth for the results. Not saying we should be elite, but Top 25.

Depends a lot on who exercises their Covid option. But ether way I expect to be active in the transfer portal looking for sec caliber options because even if some of those seniors return they should be depth and not starters

They're #27 in total defense right now and #29 in scoring. Also top 10 in sacks I'm fairly certain. The secondary is what it is, hopefully they start playing Gibson more often.

Never would have guessed that ranking. You think it’s Martinez or talent?

I'm more concerned with this year. What is wrong with Mays? Suppose to be back vs. Florida...nope. Maybe UTSA? nope. I hope the kid is OK but I'm getting tired of hearing how he's ready and then...nope. He is the solution to stabilizing the OL. I think the reason we look like we have a thin play book is because the coach knows we can't run those plays right now because of the OL play. When will he be back?

Honestly, I don't think they'll every look amazing because they will always spend more time on the field than many other defeneses. Our offense is set up to be fast-paced and high-scoring. It will cause our defense to spend a larger percentage of the game on the field than defenses who's team run the clock more. That's ok if the offense is working, because we can give up a few more points than usual with how much we score. Don't get me wrong, we need good players all over that defense, and recruiting and coaching up kids on that side of the ball is very important. But that is because they will play more often than a lot defenses. I do think that once we get some really good players in that secondary they will have a chance to put up big numbers which will help in recruiting. Just need time to get the right players here.

Well the offensive line is a developmental position but seems obvious that given we had to import 2 guys from the transfer portal (Campbell and Karic) that we haven't successfully developed many of the guys on the OL. 3rd year for Heupel so he bears some responsibility for this. Much like our safeties, it doesn't appear that our guys are very athletic on the OL and given the amount of time they are asked to pull, this is problematic.

On interior:
Mays is a good center. Not sure if he is NFL caliber but he is solid when healthy. Spraggins is decent. At least he tries to play with some spirit but lacks talent in particular in pass protection. Lane is not a SEC caliber player, despite being in program forever and he starts so that tells you alot. Karic isn't physical enough and doesn't appear to either run or pass block very well. Nichols came in with promise but has been slow to develop, which is disappointing. Lampley, much like Lane has been in program forever and can't play at this level. Clipper, Reddick as redshirt frosh have shown no promise to date. Next year is important for them to make an impact. Lang and Bussell are both true frosh and weren't expected to play.

At tackle:
Campbell has been an upgrade to either Crawford/Mincey on the left side.
Mincey/Crawford have been average at best on the right side. Davis isn't a SEC caliber player. Grant hasn't developed yet and next year is important year for him. Johnson is a project and Umarov is too young.

Next year looks brutal on the OL unless we get some players from the transfer portal. We have signed a decent class for next year, led by Warren and Anderson but we don't want to have to rely on true freshman.

I think many of us have seen this coming for a while. UT needs to get what they can this year because next year will be two things. Upgraded talent. Youth.

The good news on the OL is that it generally takes two or 3 years of development for an OL. We see the exceptions who play either because they're just that talented or out of necessity. But in a healthy program, your first time starters should mostly be 2 or 3 year guys.

That said, UT needs a center and all three of the guys who are in line to play this year will be gone next year. Parker Ball along with Lane and Mays will be out of eligibility I believe. The Vols will have 15 or 16 OLs on the roster by spring. They need someone out of the portal to take over at C. Maybe two.

If I am not mistaken, Mays can play another year.
