What say ye anti-Obamaites to news that he is blocking release of photos of detainees out of concern for effect on anti-American sentiment and fear for retribution against U.S. troops?

He must have another motive besides concern for the troops:)

Honestly, good decision by him.

He should never have politicized the issue to begin with. Now he is simply putting out a fire that he started. Pelosi is going to get burned before it is all said and done.

So if he releases them, he's grandstanding. If he blocks them, he's grandstanding.

Got it. :good!:

Here's what I think: he accidentally dropped a grenade in his own side's trench with this whole torture thing, and now he is trying to mitigate the damage.

That is absolutely correct. The grandstanding and the politicizing were both complete with the declassification. That seems to be common sense to me.

What good has really come of putting this in the public arena?

He politicized it by telling the American people he intended to release the photos to appeal to the anti-war/try Bush for war crimes crowd. He was told by intelligence and military advisers, not to mention right leaning commentators, that if there were reprisals this would blow up in his face. Classic case of grandstanding.

I don't think the torture issue suddenly came up when he became President. There was plenty of discussion about that while Bush was POTUS. Seems like the only thing that Obama has added is to try to deal with the whole issue of whether there will be any sort of prosecution of those who waterboarded or sanctioned it.

Obama is in a tough spot on this because the reality is that a huge percentage of the American people, and they may in fact be the majority, do not object in principle to torturing terror suspects. In fact, a bunch support it.

Now, they may say that their reasoning is that waterboarding is not torture. In reality, they don't care if it is.

This is not to say that they would support all forms of torture. I am sure there are things that even those who support waterboarding would simply not be able to stomach.

But the political reality is that a lot of people don't have a problem with it whereas it is at least rhetorically inconsistent with his campaign message . I think that is why he has waffled on it so.

any thought to the idea that the pictures simply aren't damning enough to support his worldview?

I like how you think. So he comes out with a statement and says the pics are so bad that they would create more anti american sentiment. Getting his fellow brethern up in arms, all without releasing one photo of a western killing jihadist wearing a brazear on his head.

Best move by obama so far. If he let those pictures out before his mideast trip he has planned it would have cost him his re-election

It would have been an error of epic proportions if he released them

the error was in not squashing them completely using the power of his office. This just leaves room for them to get out in the future

Did not know he had one coming up. He should have let them out, would have given him one more item to apologize for. But I doubt his list is running short.

You can't have it both ways. His initial report was that he was going to releases them. Now he's back to the same position of the Bush administration. After looking through the issue he realized the original position was correct. Ironic isn't it.

he's still a socialist.

and, even a blind pig digs up a truffle every once in a while.

also, I think he must have seen pictures of his teleprompter actually performing some of the waterboarding. He couldn't handle the controversy that would have ensued that knowledge being released to the public.
