Obama elevating the SBA to Cabinet level

Here's an article

Obama to Elevate SBA Chief - WSJ.com

R's criticize him for not doing enough so he makes this move but there is no indication it will have more impact.

The White House didn't provide details concerning whether the SBA's current administrator, Karen Mills, would be granted a higher authority or additional responsibilities as a result of her elevated position.

I rate the move a "meh"

Found this interesting too

"On every small-business issue from day one, Karen has had the president's ear," said Gene Sperling, director of the White House's National Economic Council. "She is a tenacious, tireless and effective advocate for small business."

I'd like to see the SBA loosen its requirements for backing/guaranteeing loans. Can't remember what the numbers were, but I recall seeing an article a year or two ago and the amount they actually back (total, not just to one business) seemed awfully small to me.

Agreed - even though they've stream-lined it's still a pain the arse to get real help from the SBA.

This is just window dressing IMO. Payroll tax break for a year, SBA as a cabinet position, incentives to hire vets. All show and little go.

I agree that the SBA thing is goofy. Disagree wholeheartedly on the payroll tax cut.

My point on that is that it is nibbling around the edges at best. There are tons of bigger changes that could be made to get the economy going.

I would not argue with your contention that other things could be done. I just don't think there is the political will to do them because, invariably, someone's ox is being gored.
