I don't think this is surprising news to anyone.

WASHINGTON – Threats against a new president historically spike right after an election, but from Maine to Idaho law enforcement officials are seeing more against Barack Obama than ever before. The Secret Service would not comment or provide the number of cases they are investigating. But since the Nov. 4 election, law enforcement officials have seen more potentially threatening writings, Internet postings and other activity directed at Obama than has been seen with any past president-elect, said officials aware of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the issue of a president's security is so sensitive.

Earlier this week, the Secret Service looked into the case of a sign posted on a tree in Vay, Idaho, with Obama's name and the offer of a "free public hanging." In North Carolina, civil rights officials complained of threatening racist graffiti targeting Obama found in a tunnel near the North Carolina State University campus.

And in a Maine convenience store, an Associated Press reporter saw a sign inviting customers to join a betting pool on when Obama might fall victim to an assassin. The sign solicited $1 entries into "The Osama Obama Shotgun Pool," saying the money would go to the person picking the date closest to when Obama was attacked. "Let's hope we have a winner," said the sign, since taken down.

In the security world, anything "new" can trigger hostility, said Joseph Funk, a former Secret Service agent-turned security consultant who oversaw a private protection detail for Obama before the Secret Service began guarding the candidate in early 2007.

The thing about Obama is that he could very well be done in by someone that is pro-Obama.

I saw that coming. The only reason I wish he didn't win is because I knew these racist morons would do this crap

Anybody who would wish physical harm to a president-elect should be rapidly escorted to a third world country. I don't care what your politcal affiliation is.

My response as well. I am diametrically opposed to most things that Obama stands for, but at least I don't have to worry about what is going to come out of his mouth every time he gives a speech. Biden would probably have us getting attacked by Canada by the end of his first State of the Union Address.

Just shows you how much race is a extreme factor in this country. The past 8 years the country has been run my the biggest moron in the white house. Before the black man is even elected he gets racist threats. Even if he could turn this country around for the better, it doesn't matter because he's black. So the young men in my community can't dream of being the president without thinking they will die for it.

I'm so pissed

You are obviously overlooking the fact that an African-American was just elected to the highest office in the free-world. However, that self-righteous and unfounded anger will do you well in life. Keep up the good work.

keep 'em coming.

I can't stand Bush for what he ended up being, but I'd bet everything I own and all future earnings on him over you in a battle of IQs. I wouldn't slow down for the opportunity to place that bet.

There is some racism at work, but it's just another excuse for the lunatics that threaten every President, so don't try that excuse. It comes with the territory.

So they have seen more threatening internet postings than with any previous president-elect? Wow, imagine that. So that would cover about the past 2 presidents?

The internet was neither widespread nor user friendly enough in 1992 in order to use WJC's election as a reference.

I agree. I was trying to be very generous to their "point".
screw the point, it's asinine. Pretending that racism isn't a two way street is just blindness.

Racism in America is about the 400th largest problem issue facing our new administration, but to listen to folks like VbN, it's first and foremost. That's a freaking issue for me.

Hey, you're right. Anger will surely blind you, just fearing for the mans life. He and his family doesn't deserve that

It's not the biggest factor, but it is a big freaking deal

Every president in our history has had the same concern. Obama might find it minimally intensified, but it won't be dramatically so.

He knew that walking into the gig, as did Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Carter.......

It is a big deal, but not the deal you made it out to be. You ignore the blatant racism that no doubt exists in your own neighborhood to point out that there might be some racist out there plotting against our president.

Where were you to blister Reverend Wright when we needed you?
