Obama Limits When U.S. Would Use Nuclear Arms

Who needs nukes when you can sit down, and talk your enemies out of being your enemy.

For the first time, the United States is explicitly committing not to use nuclear weapons against nonnuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, even if they attacked the United States with biological or chemical weapons or launched a crippling cyberattack.

Those threats, Mr. Obama argued, could be deterred with “a series of graded options,” a combination of old and new conventional weapons. “I’m going to preserve all the tools that are necessary in order to make sure that the American people are safe and secure,” he said in the interview in the Oval Office.

Why? Why give up a deterrent?

But Mr. Bush’s document also reserved the right to use nuclear weapons “to deter a wide range of threats,” including banned chemical and biological weapons and large-scale conventional attacks. Mr. Obama’s strategy abandons that option — except if the attack is by a nuclear state, or a nonsignatory or violator of the nonproliferation treaty.

So we reserve the right to use nukes against some countries but not others for the exact same offense?

Not that they'd ever be used anyhow, but I see no reason in publicly taking an option off the table.

What a jackass.

Why is this public knowledge?

This. I see nothing to gain by coming out like this. I mean, I think that has been our policy for awhile anyway. But you don't say it out loud. It makes us look weak.

It hasn't bother BHO to make us look weak thru his first 18 months. Why would it bother him now?

And as far as nothing to gain.

There is a section of his voting base thats wants more than this done.

reminds me of the scene from "Aliens" when the marines are told that they can't use any exploding ammo and the one black marine (not the sergeant) remarks, "what are supposed to use now, harsh language?"

except that in Obama's case, not even his harsh language is effective. Sasha and Malia probably laugh when he uses the TOTUS to scold them.

It seems to me that Obama is trying to gain something or send a message here. The obvious question would be who this is intended for, I would think Iran is the most obvious choice. It sounds like we are trying to gain some trust by publicly announcing this, otherwise it simply doesn't make sense.

Thats like an officer that carries a gun and then tells everyone that he/she will never use it. That officer will not last long

I think it's a message to the whole world, that now that Barry is POTUS we are now a weaker country and will work to appease all of our enemies because we don't want them mad at us.

Notice the exceptions carved out for the likes of North Korea, etc. And it doesn't apply to nuclear powers, such as Russia or China. Basically, what we are saying is that if we are attacked by Ireland, we aren't going to use nukes.

This really isn't much of a change in any real terms.

I have no problem with that. Just dont announce it to the world.

Obama must suck at poker too!!

It's an effective deterent against even non-nuclear countries to think they could get nuked if they were to try and bomb us, but they don't have to worry about that anymore. Peace through weakness, let's watch and see how well this line of thinking works.

Like who? Name one non-nuclear country that could or ever would bomb us (and that isn't otherwise an exception to the policy, such as N Korea or Iran) such that our conventional weapons wouldn't be enough to easily disuade them from trying?

Guatemala? Norway?

Without having China, Iran, and Syria in the room, this policy is a huge FAIL. If the other superpowers dont follow suite, we are going to appear significantly weaker imo.

Who knows which countries, you never know when some crazy dictator would try something if he knows he won't get nuked. Hell with Barry I am not sure we would defend ourselves at all if we got bombed, he would want to sit down and talk with them while our country is getting bombed to hell.
