With their racing budgets deemed “unnecessary expenditures,” GM and Chrysler are ordered to cease racing operations at the end of the season.

April 2009

In a move sure to spark outrage, the White House announced today that GM and Chrysler must cease participation in NASCAR at the end of the 2009 season if they hope to receive any additional financial aid from the government. Companies around the globe—Honda and Audi, to name two—have drawn down racing operations, and NASCAR itself has already felt the pinch in the form of reduced team spending. A complete withdrawal from America’s premier racing series is expected to save more than $250 million between GM and Chrysler, a substantial amount considering the drastic measures being implemented elsewhere.

I don't know what to think about this. I haven't been a follower of racing for many years but I just can't see how this is a good thing either for nascar or for the auto makers. This will almost certainly force Nascar to suspend their events until this shakes out, think of all the lost revenue that would cost us. I don't see this happening. Once Nascar points out the tax revenue their merchandise and ticket sales generate I'm sure the administration will have to rethink this. JMO.

April the first announcements...gotta love them. You would think it would have made Sports Center.

The loss in taxes alone make this a lose lose proposition.

Not sure how I feel about this. I don't think GM and Chrysler should be spending millions sponsoring/helping out Nascar when they are about to go under or at least close several plants and they are taking millions in loans from the gov't. If they do pull out of nascar will Nascar be able to continue in the way it is now without the support of the major manufacturers. At the end of the day Nascar is probably the best advertisment for the major manufactuers.

They are involved in NASCAR because it benefits them in many ways, they are not in it to help NASCAR, it is mutually beneficial for both.

The more i think about it this announcement sounds more like a threat to induce manufacturers to make more concessions, force them to put more on the table in return for the bailout.

If it will save them a quarter of a billion dollars, then ya, they should back out.

Obama is such a 'tard.

GM and Chrysler may indeed end up shutting down their Nascar operations, but it won't be because some community organizer with access to nuclear weapons "orders" them to.

I see your point but you have to weigh that with how much revenue their NASCAR teams bring for the company.

I think the poll should also be if the Fed should be dictating how businesses promote/advertise. This seems like a dangerous precedent to set.

If GMC and Chrysler enter bankruptcy, which looks likely, I think their racing budget will be on the chopping block.
