RIA Novosti - Russia - Obama 'ready to drop shield plans for Russian help on Iran'

MOSCOW, March 2 (RIA Novosti) - Washington has told Moscow that Russian help in resolving Iran's nuclear program would make its missile shield plans for Europe unnecessary, a Russian daily said on Monday, citing White House sources. U.S. President Barack Obama made the proposal on Iran in a letter to his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, Kommersant said, referring to unidentified U.S. officials.
Iran's controversial nuclear program was cited by the U.S. as one of the reasons behind its plans to deploy a missile base in Poland and radar in the Czech Republic. The missile shield has been strongly opposed by Russia, which views it as a threat to its national security. The dispute has strained relations between the former Cold War rivals, already tense over a host of other differences.
The leaders have exchanged letters and had a telephone conversation since Obama was sworn into office in January, Kommersant said. The first high-level Russia-U.S. meeting will take place later this week, when Russia Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov meets with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Geneva.
Moscow has not yet responded to the proposal by Obama, the paper said, adding that a decision was unlikely to be made during Lavrov and Clinton's meeting.

What would Tom Clancy say?

this is a prime example of the ignorance of hussein. he's going to agree to drop missle defense if russia helps with iran nukes. but, iran and russia have been working together for the past couple of years. do you hussein supporters really think russia will do anything to change iran's mind? hussein will make all the concessions and he'll end up looking like an idiot (again).

libs should be tried for treason.

BHO is just trying to work a merger between the US and the USSR. Share the same government plan.

This has Clinton's North Korea disaster written all over it. Made worse by the fact that BO is dying to scrap SDI so he can say he is saving money.

In the end, Iran will have its nukes and Russia will claim a victory over our weakness.

This move is pure Clinton and Carter style pacifism.

He will get an assurance he has the Russian help he is looking for, meanwhile Russia will continue it's support in Iran much the same as it has. History has shown you cannot deal with the Russians in this way, they suckered Bush and they will sucker Obama in much the same way.

In a perfect world, I like this idea. If the entire reason for the European defense shield is the Iranian threat, which is what we've said time and again, then if that threat goes away the defense shield goes away. I've said many times that I have a lot of doubt about how effective our shield would be anyway...but I've decided to try to slowly ween myself off of that viewpoint. Though I have serious doubts about the basic physics .... I'm going to try to stop complaining so much about it...instead I am going to hope that we can get the right testing and an open development strategy that can alleviate my concerns.

On to my point...my problem is that this clearly isn't a perfect world....and the chances of Russia actually effecting any long-term change in Iran's nuclear weapons posture are slim to none, IMO. Sure, they can use their reactor designs as leverage, but I see this going nowhere as of right now.

However, as for your comments about Russia aiding Iran...to my knowledge that was limited to reactor designs and (perhaps, I can't remember...) low-grade enrichment technology. Is the concern that they are masking high-grade enrichment as low-grade enrichment for those of you who suggested Russia was helping Iran with its program. Or, do you think that the reactors are capable of plutonium production?

The SDI was ostensibly for the threat from Iran, but realistically, it is 100% to cram in the earhole of guys like Putin.

Debate is moot. I simply don't want the development program mothballed. I don't care if we ever protect one inch of Europe as long as we deploy the system, if and when effective, so that everyone else in the world is well aware that it's out there, operational and effective.

I don't think there is any doubt that Russia helps Iran at every level with the nuclear program. If if helps them to collude in keeping oil pricing at a level that helps them sustain their economy, they'll do it. Right now, neither of them has any sway over pricing. It's killing Russia and the Iranians can simply wait it out.

Just out of curiosity, why would you hope that? Also, I have yet to see you bring any evidence to the table supporting your claim that all liberals are treasonous.

...as for the subject of this thread. Yeah, this is pretty much retarded.

anyone to vote for the modern day leftist/socialist should be considered an accomplice to the politician's treasonous action. i know most people who vote for dems are poorer and have less education, but still, that's no excuse.
