Love or hate the man, I thought this was an interesting article given the current claims coming from Republicans (and I'm aware that equally ambiguous ones come from the Democrats) and this forum. It concerns Obama and how much government spends. As the article accurately points out, some credit may be due to a Republican-controlled house, but this alone does not explain things completely. The fact is that the rhetoric just doesn't always add up.

seems kinda odd to simply talk about spending and devote one line to revenue. When you make less money shouldn't your budget also decrease?

Haven't read the debunking of this silliness?

Oh, never mind. You're a history guy.

So Obama/Congress (as inept as they may be) are taking steps towards leveling our revenue with our expenditures (since the govt. increase went up less), or no? I'm not claiming he or Congress are doing things right necessarily, I just thought the article helped quash some of the rumors concerning his administration's record.

I'm sure there's a good, ol' fashioned debunking to be found somewhere. Heritage Foundation maybe?

Actually, the debunking was from a lot of angles. The headline was utter garbage. I mistakenly assumed you capable of doing it yourself.

how are they trying to do that? Revenue continues to drop and even that article states spending continues to increase. This govt has no desire to cut spending and to pretend otherwise is ridiculous. Votes cost money

I routinely live in a fantasyland, where I ride upon gummy-bear unicorns and serenade mermaids underneath a kaleidoscope sky. And I'm well-loved for it! :)

But this one was easy and you should have known better.

Further, ignoring aca is simply intellectually bankrupt.

You may be right, and I don't necessarily pretend to understand the nuances and complexities of an advanced economy like our own, but is it possible that a country's needs in terms of spending increases over four-year increments?

The article you've tagged s flawed. Yes technically 2009 is Bush's so called last fiscal year however a majority of the spending came from obamas policies in the first three months after the inauguration.

You need to stop reading crap supported by the wall street journal.

And hasn't the CBO said that the ACA will eventually lower the deficit? I'm sure I'll be told how that's wrong though. And heck, maybe it is. They've probably been wrong before: things aren't always an exact science.

Bush's policies did help drive the debt up.

The Bush Tax cuts

The war on terror

The Afghanistan War

The Iraq war

The Medicare prescription drug

The Bank Bailouts...

No way it's wrong. Those guys always get that stuff right, being nonpartisan and all.

Not sure if serious.

So our spending needs haven't increased at all since the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, or the 1790s, for that matter? I'm not saying we need to keep running up the spending at the cost of increasing the deficit, so please don't misinterpret me; however, doesn't it make sense that a country's needs will grow with a growing population?
