U.S. threatens to rescind stimulus money over wage cuts - Los Angeles Times

The Obama administration is threatening to rescind billions of dollars in federal stimulus money if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers do not restore wage cuts to unionized home healthcare workers approved in February as part of the budget.

I thought this was the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. I thought his mantra was everyone has to "sacrifice". I guess not. Everyone does not have to sacrifice. I thought we were trying to reduce healthcare costs too, but not if they are union workers. This guy is all over the place.

you only have to sacrifice if you are rich and don't work for a union. everyone else is safe.

California is getting what they deserve. Those asshats were a major force in putting President Obama in power, now they are dealing with said consequences. BTW take note people: California is being run much in the way that Palosi, Reid, and Obama want to run the whole country and look at the absolute mess that state is in....

I am confused. Had California already agreed to restore the cuts and then decided not to follow through?

why should union folks keep their benefits when others lose out? labor unions 2009 are the death of American industry and the catalyst for the overseas production of domestic products

I would imagine there is language in the Stimulus bill preventing states from cutting in particular areas. Hmmm, wonder how that got in there?

This is a perfect example of why some governors were wary of accepting the Stimulus hand cuffs. Of course, the Stimulus Bill also included a provision whereby state legislatures could bypass the governor if Stimulus cash were refused.

You're just making that up.

I got the impression reading what he posted that California had specifically agreed to that and is reneging. I really don't know, just wondering if droski can

I think they had already agreed to the wage cuts but Obama is making the Cal legislature reverse the cuts.

we have no money. The $8 bil isn't enough. we need to cut somewhere. this is the first i've heard the money was contingent on not cutting wages.

California sure does offer some amazing public services, though, I'll say that. Smooth and wide roads, uncrowded parks, etc. Costs a lot of money.

it's the unions bleeding us dry. the pension liabilities for just the teachers union would bankrupt most states.

Tennessee has those too, fortunately we don't have to deal with a public employees union that's forgotten where their money actually comes from.

I'm not making it up. There were multiple provisions in the Stimulus bill regarding what states must do to receive the money. I can't say if that's the case here but I'm not "making" up the strings attached to the monies or the provisions regarding state legislatures vs. governors.
