America's Secret Plan to Arm Libyan Rebels

Desperate to avoid US military involvement in Libya in the event of a prolonged struggle between the Gaddafi regime and its opponents, the Americans have asked Saudi Arabia if it can supply weapons to the rebels in Benghazi. The Saudi Kingdom, already facing a "day of rage" from its 10 per cent Shia Muslim community on Friday, with a ban on all demonstrations, has so far failed to respond to Washington's highly classified request, although King Abdullah personally loathes the Libyan leader, who tried to assassinate him just over a year ago.

Washington's request is in line with other US military co-operation with the Saudis. The royal family in Jeddah, which was deeply involved in the Contra scandal during the Reagan administration, gave immediate support to American efforts to arm guerrillas fighting the Soviet army in Afghanistan in 1980 and later – to America's chagrin – also funded and armed the Taliban.

Obama's incompetence in all matters of foreign policy should be an impeachable offense.

Highly classified request seems a bit misleading.

Oprahbama should arm the Libiyans with nukes. Tell them we'll deliver them by plane, just look up and we'll drop them down to you.

Highly classified must not mean what it use too.

Either that or someone in the DoD (the SoD is already on record as opposed to intervention in Libya) "accidentally" let this leak.

You can't covertly arm a rebel group once the story is blown. Now, Obama will be forced to make a real decision.

I say don't. Last time we armed a group we ended up fighting them later on. (Taliban)

I'd like us to stay out of it.

But I do wonder what Obama would say to Saudia Arabia if their day of rage turns ugly and they really crack down on protesters. Would Obama suggest to another country to arm those protesters also?

Exactly why we should stay out of it.

I have a hard time believing this, but I guess it could happen. If highly classified documents just get leaked left and right like this then I think we have a bigger issue at hand than just some poorly armed Libyan freedom fighters.

First, you assume it is true, which I don't think you can do quite yet. For one thing, it seems to me that there quite a few people who would benefit from a false claim like this, ie radical Islamists that want to portray the US as meddling, political forces that want to make it look like the Saudi royals are beholden to the US, or even the Saudis themselves, looking for political cover if aid by them has been found out.

Second, just yesterday I heard all sorts of Republican criticism that Obama is not doing enough to help the revolt. Then, I hear them critical of getting involved in a no fly zone. And so now, if this is true, are the Republicans going to criticize this, too? I mean, come on, take a position and stick with it. Don't flip to the other side just to have something to whine about.

There is truth here.

If the Repubs want to play politics here, fine. But admit that is what you are doing.

Doesn't matter anyway, I doubt this story is completely true.

Truer words were never spoken!

I knew I could find common ground with you if I looked
far enough.

Awww. Someone is looking to reconcile. Don't do it theReal...

Atrapitis.gif

You mean 'UNreal' instead of 'thereal.'

Reconciliation isn't my objective, unreal can go to hell as far as I'm concerned and may the wind be at his back.

I'm only interested in civility as it reflects the desires of the owner of this message board.

I'm looking to making a vistit to Memphis to visit some old friends as some point, do you want to come out for a beer or three or not?
