Debt Ceiling Is Flawed Vehicle for Addressing Deficit - WSJ.com

One notable recent grandstander was President Barack Obama, the man who now badly wants the debt ceiling raised to prevent financial disaster. When he was a Democratic senator and Republican George W. Bush was president, Mr. Obama took to the Senate floor to declare that raising the debt ceiling amounted to "leadership failure," and he voted against it

of course they do which is why it's rare for ex-Pres to criticize a current one

Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally.

would like to know if he still agrees with this though

It is rare for ex-Republican presidents to criticize a current one.

Carter and Clinton had no problem criticizing W while he was in office. Hell Clinton criticized him while visiting the Middle East at the very time we were deep in a war in the Middle East - very bad form IMHO.

On the other hand, I don't recall Reagan or either Bush inserting themselves into the debate while a Dem was in office.

Reagan had bigger fish to fry, with his medical issue.

True.

We can say though that of the last 4 presidents capable of openly criticizing a sitting president 2 did (both Dems) and 2 did not (both Reps).

Can't recall Ford either way but betting he wasn't out there railing on Carter or Clinton.

I remember Reagan getting after Clinton on the plan to kill Star War funding and defense cuts but nothing like Clinton did to W. W did make a weak attack on Obama's dealings with Pakistan and how he dealt with Iran's Ahmadinejad.

Obviously, the Democrats did nothing that deserved criticism, Reagan and Bush Pere had the good sense to refrain.
