I am just going to throw stuff out there, have fun with it!

Question: What is Objective Morality and related terms?

Question: Why should someone be moral?

Question: If all people agree that suffering is immoral, then why do they continue to kill animals for food when its unnecessary?

Question: If being stabbed is not suffering for a Masochist, and being stabbed for an average person is, then suffering is all relative, right?

Question: Isn't Objective Morality just another form of Subjective Morality?

Question: If someone doesn't help another in distress, are they immoral?

Question: What if you're stuck in the forest without food and kill a boar for meat? Are you immoral then?

Question: What if someone steals some items of yours and you want them back? Is taking them back, causing your adversary to suffer, immoral?

Question: If I suffer when a natural disaster occurs, does that make the natural disaster immoral?

I asked volmanjr? the ninja guy if he would like to discuss something different from the norm and he said peachy.

So I started the thread. I am a few years out of college thankfully.

I always said college was a blast but all the classes got in the way!

Really all depends on your personal world view, broken into to seperate camps. The Humanist camp and the "Religious camp".

Please keep in mind that this is abreviated, not an exhaustive comparison.

Humanists are those who believe that the human race is "evolving" into perfection, and that left to its own devices will eventually develop into perfect people leading to Utopia, or a perfect society. They generally also believe if wealth is distributed equally basic morality will follow. They think that all people, especially the suffering, are victims and victims always have the moral high ground.

Humanists think the the answers to life's moral questions are answered from within. That makes morality relative and dynamic.

"Religious camp" believe that the human race is imperfect and that the moral code is static. The rules have been established by a Higher Being, and that humans don't create the code, they just live within its boundaries. In this system, because the moral code is fixed, it is not relative. Morality is the same yesterday as it will be tomorrow.

Evolving toward perfection and being human is an oxymoron, because we are human there is no way to be perfect. All humans have good and evil in their hearts, some are just better at controlling which permeates to the surface through their actions.

Question: What is Objective Morality and related terms? Objective morality is morality that is shared by all sane people. Murder is commonly thought of as a good example.

Question: Why should someone be moral? It is a social contract. You act morally so other people will act morally.

Question: If all people agree that suffering is immoral, then why do they continue to kill animals for food when its unnecessary? Do animals suffer? Probably, but we cannot be sure. Do animlas act morally? No. Animals are outside the social contract and therefore we are under no obligation to act morally towards them.

Question: If being stabbed is not suffering for a Masochist, and being stabbed for an average person is, then suffering is all relative, right? No. I thnk you have it backwards here. Pleasure is relative. Suffering cannot be pleasurable by definition. The masochist who likes to be stabbed does not suffer when stabbed, therefore the sensation that the masochist receives from the stabbing has no effect on the relativity of suffering.

Question: Isn't Objective Morality just another form of Subjective Morality? An objective thing cannot be subjective and vice versa. Technically the answer is no.

Question: If someone doesn't help another in distress, are they immoral? Would you expect someone to stop and help you if you were in the other person's position? If you answer yes, then it would be immoral for you not to help. If you can honestly answer no then it would not be immoral.

Question: What if you're stuck in the forest without food and kill a boar for meat? Are you immoral then? No. See my prior answer concerning animals.

Question: What if someone steals some items of yours and you want them back? Is taking them back, causing your adversary to suffer, immoral? No. They broke the social contract by stealing my property. I am no longer under a duty to act morally with regard to them.

Question: If I suffer when a natural disaster occurs, does that make the natural disaster immoral? A natural disaster cannot be moral or immoral. To act morally or immorally requires a decision, a choice between right and wrong. The natural disaster does not choose to occur or not.
