Offense too fast?

Ok everyone is screaming for adjusments by the coaches. Wouldn't you want to adjust your offense to actually put together a driver lasting more than 2 minutes. I mean we all know at this point our defense is bad. You have to help them out some though.

Our offense is a quick strike offense. If we ask them to slow down and grind it out we may end up with more three and outs. We need to do what we do well. No one ever lost because they scored too many points. If we slow down, the final score is 21-17 instead of 55-48. It's still a one score game that could go either way. Improve the defense, don't shackle the offense.

Gator fan here.

I think the OP makes an interesting point and Will Muschamp actually addressed this issue today in his press conference:

"Being on the same page with Brent (Pease, our Off Coordinator) offensively as far as approaching the game and doing what we need to do to win the game, I think that's something that this staff has done as good a job as any staff I've been on - seeing the big picture and understanding what it's going to take to win the game. Offense, defense, and special teams. That's where my role comes together to tie the whole thing together so that everybody understands what we need to do to win the game. So many times, I think, you have a one-sided opinion of what you need to do to win the game. Well, that may not help the other side of the ball. So, we've got to be on the same page as far as what we need to do to win."

It sounds like UT may have a problem with the offense having a one-sided opinion of how to win the game and they fail to give consideration to the defense. If the defense is struggling or has depth issues, etc., then your offense needs to think about managing the clock and winning the time of possession. At UF, our situation is the opposite: the defense and special teams are our strength and our O has struggled. Therefore, Will might make more aggressive defensive calls and put more responsibility on our punter and FG kickers to help the O (potentially giving them shorter fields, etc.).

Anyway, just wanted to chime in from a Florida perspective and felt Coach Muschamp's words might help the Vols with this situation. Dooley and Muschamp are good friends, so Derek would probably be welcome to call or meet with Will in the offseason about getting your O and D to play for each other and get on the same page. Right now, though, it looks to me like you've got some dissonance.

I posted this same argument Saturday night in a thread saying our biggest problem in the Dooley era has been time of possession. While i totally agree with the OP, im afraid this high octane offense is the only way we can win these last 3. But we do need a philosophy change. If the offense can score in 3 plays, they should be able to execute some 12 play drives.

I totally agree with you, but coming into the season everyone knew the D was going to have its issues. Let our O score all they want but let's not bash a pretty thin defensewhen they are tired and out on the field so long. Honestly Ive been impressed with the fact that they have gone all 4qtrs this yr. Last yr we couldn't say the same thing.

Lets be honest though our O have left pts on the field though and it has hurt us, so blame can get passed around. They did it at the end vs Troy and the D stepped it up in the 4th qtr.

I'm sure cdd knows this is an issue. Just really tough when everything is a mess and your trying to fix it 1 by 1 correctly. Especially when the fan base wants and thinks it can be done all at once.

Thanks for the info you brought :hi:

I say forget cover 2 , forget man , and bring the rain with corner blitz or inside blitz, don't send AJ our Maggit out to cover wideouts let them pickup runs or blitz the QB .

I realize that our Defense is not good. Not even close to good. Although our offense is not helping us out much. Yeah they are putting tons of points up. I have no problem in that. Except that we only had 2 drives that took 3+ minutes off the clock. We have to be able to sustain a drive and eat up some of the clock. Troy had what 37 mins for time of possession. While I know we had blown coverages, missed tackles, and assignment issues. We also gave the defense little to no rest. I am almost ready to see us back in the huddle instead of the fast paced offense we are running. Lets eat some clock up. While its great that we have all this offense. It is terrible that we are unable to eat any clock up to help our defense that we all know is terrible.

You Know, its funny how when I brought this up before the season when everybody was "air raid" crazy and nobody would listen to my black ass and now some of yall see the light!! Good Post my friend

Message to Sal: "Blitz." Forget our secondary... they can't cover no matter what.

I disagree here. He should get the corners off the receivers and play more zone. Our corners, safeties and linebackers seem slow and unsure . I think we should try to keep the ball in front of us and play way more conservatively. Limit the big plays and make the offenses work the ball down the field.

Funny people are in here blasting me for the same thinking. Yet want to complain that our D is giving up to many yards and to many big plays. Your offense needs to keep the ball for 3-4 minutes per drive to slow the game down some. These quick hitters that take 1 minute off the clock are killing the defense. People that are saying its the defenses job to get off the field. Yep and its the offenses job to keep them off the field. Works both ways. This offense is good enough with enough playmakers that they could move the ball without having to rely on the quick strike. Dont get me wrong I love to see that we have no problem generating offense now. Something we couldn't seem to do in the later years of Fulmer. At what expense has that cost us right now?

To much bottomline greed. They confuse "cause and effect" for "making excuse." If our program was on a good solid foundation then this level of whining would be warranted, but we r not and haven't been for a long time. Takes time to put the right pieces together and see what works. Sometimes one can't move on without certain pieces are complete. Being in a highly regulated industry even adds to the difficulty and time.

Just IMO that's all...
