We ran the ball only 21 times today compared to 46 passes. I have read some posts tonight that argued we should embrace our identity as a passing offense and run a lot more 3 and 4-wideout sets from the shotgun. Others think we have to work harder to establish the run with Foster or Hardesty (Coker if he's not hurt too bad).

Of course, some people got on Cutcliffe for trying to run too much against Florida.

So, what should we do against South Carolina?

Give up man, it is impossible to please some UT fans. I say do whatever works to make sure we win. B/C winning is all i am concerned with.

Hey, man, I was just trying to be funny.

I think we should do whatever the opposing D allows. If they stack the line, light up our WR's. If they drop a lot into coverage, pound it down their throats.

I am with CBC. Just win, baby!

No, I get what you were both saying. I guess I should explain, the reason this is relevant is that a lot of people aren't happy that Ainge threw some picks in the first half. Well, if you pass nearly 50 times in a game, there will probably be some interceptions. We offensively put the entire game on Ainge and our receivers today.

Don't get me wrong, I'm ecstatic we won, I just hope we can run the ball better in the future.

For whatever reason, Ainge had a bad first half. His mechanics were off causing him to throw almost every pass high. He corrected it at halftime and ripped a Bama defense that had only been allowing 159 passing ypg.

With the clock changes, UT is probably averaging two less possessions per game than during the last Cut era and they are averaging about the same number of points as the best Shuler/Manning/Martin led teams.

What the Vols are doing isn't broke... in fact it works quite well. I wish they could run better but as long as they are averaging about twice the yds per play passing as running even when you include interceptions... they should stick with it.

Ainge didn't look good to me. Bad the 1st half, better the 2nd -- but still not good. He looked a little confused on where to go with the ball.

1. Hard to run the ball when the defense is +2 against our blockers.

2. Why didn't we expose them over the middle more? It looked like the Jeff Francis offense out there...we threw like 35 3 yard quick outs. I don't understand it, but I wasn't watching their coverages real close.

BTW, UT is in the top 10 in the NCAA for yards per attempt at around 9.2. They are around 70th in avg yds per rush at something under 4.

Interpretation= throw it.

I think that the middle was very dangerous tonight with the way Ainge was confused / throwing high. We would have had a lot more than 3 pics. Overall...I am pretty happy. One pic was just really good D. The third/last was a desperation throw...I'm not sure how I feel about it. One pic was him all the way. But .. the heart he showed to get down there...make the tackle...and save 4 points (touchdown - field goal) ... that was the difference in the game.

Um... they were ranked 16th in passing defense. The only other team that had passed for over 200 yards against them was Hawaii. The Mighty Gators had 197. Arkansas had 97 against them.

It is a safe beat that they play pretty good pass defense.

I'd disagree with your assessment though. Ainge didn't throw it particularly well but for the most part I don't think he was confused. Only one play did it look like he didn't choose the right guy.

He looked more like a pitcher that didn't have his best stuff and just had to push through.
