Official Jon Gruden Thread VIII

Our program needs stability as much as anything. I just don't see Gruden wanting to be a college coach, and all that entails. There are 32 NFL teams, and a thousand college programs. Even if you discount all the underperformers, just how many Alabamas do you think there are out there? It is gonna take UT a long long time to get back to prominence. He's gonna have to go on the road recruiting.. and I mean RIGHT NOW!... In the pros.. not a problem to recruit. He has to deal with egos there, true, but I would be really really surprised to see him walk away from the pro gig for a third tier college program, and that is what we are right now. Sorry.. JMHO.

The NFL Today: Arkansas, Tennessee want Jon Gruden - CBSSports.com

College football could provide more lifestyle balance than the pro game, as well as a new challenge for Gruden, who last coached in college in 1991 as the wide receivers coach at Pitt. Gruden has been spending significant time studying Chip Kelly's Oregon spread offense, sources said, which is perfectly suited for college but remains a question mark in terms of its translation to the NFL. Several sources said Gruden would strongly consider Redskins secondary coach Raheem Morris as his defensive coordinator. Morris coached in Tampa under Gruden and succeeded him as head coach before being fired after 2011. Morris, who had a stint as the defensive coordinator at Kansas State, is viewed as a strong recruiter. However, sources said Morris is more likely to focus on possible NFL opportunities at this point in his career.

Spill the beans if you expect us to share what we know....ha ha

Just what I had posted in some of the other threads that because of his position at a very large home manufacturing company and close relationship with the CEO of said company he is privy to things coming from te important people like the Haslems. Basically has said everything said here. Throwing the bank at Gruden. Few things needed taken care of. Those have been cleared up now and was told 100% on Gruden last week. I believe him obviously its just UT has let me down so much I question they can do something right sometimes

hmm..Some of that sounds familiar... Where did I hear that about a month ago (Vandy week).... Who was it that said that...:whistling:

Seriously though I honestly do not believe it would have mattered if we would have lost or won the Vandy game.. He was gone either way...:hi:

Let me ask 2 questions real quick though....open for everyone to answer,,

1. Does anyone remember the interview that PF did talking about he remembered coaching with JG about a month ago?

2. Does anyone think the timing of celebration before the Bama game was a little odd? Especially with the folks that were in the stands and were accidentally caught on Camera?

Just asking the questions...:hi:

On #1?

"Jon was a great GA," Fulmer said. "A very bright guy. Very enthusiastic. Very energetic."

Mark Wiedmer: Phillip Fulmer still loves the Vols | timesfreepress.com

So would Tee get wide receivers and Hinshaw move to TE's.

Yes, Tee would get the WR's but not sure what Hinshaw would take over..Anf if I'm not mistaken,Tee may be named the recruiting coordinator as well..Can't remember who mentioned this.

It's not a problem to recruit in the NFL because it doesn't exist.

From the same article that Coasty is referencing

League sources said Gruden has made calls identifying possible staff members with his focus seeming more on the college game, asking questions of those potential staffers about recruiting and issues that do not relate to pro football. Numerous sources who have talked to him in recent weeks came away with the impression that Gruden was more serious about return to coaching now than at any time since he was fired by the Bucs after the 2008 season, although it still would have to be a perfect situation to lure him from his current job at ESPN, where he is well compensated and gets to have a fairly normal family life. While coaching in the NFL, Gruden was notorious for his maniacal approach to coaching, in a nearly round-the-clock fashion.

We hired Dooley for stability. We need WINS more than anything. You're insane if you think recruiting will be a problem for Gruden and the staff he can assemble.

You miss my point. The stability I am talking about is KNOWING that he will be here for a long time. I am sure he could do a bang up recruiting job just like the other pro coach we tried. I guess I am concerned that the siren's song would come from somewhere in an NFL city and we'd be back to square 1.

If we were to actually hire the guy, I would hope we pay him waaaaaaay more than Saban because that is what it will take to keep him here. He AND his assistants.

And I reeeeeeally hope that Tressel rumor is just a rumor. Big 10<SEC.

Who wouldn't want to be the coach that brings the Tennessee Vols from a point in which they are bordering obscurity back to the top? Because, in my eyes, that's what a Gruden hire would mean. Perhaps I'm overconfident, and I in no way expect that the first year or two, but for someone with his personality, it's a new challenge that he could easily take on and at which he could succeed. We'll see how it goes, but here's hoping.

Gruden may very well end up at Tennessee. If he does I will support him and the team. All I am saying that there are better coach`s than Gruden.
