Official Jon Gruden Thread VIII

this thread moves way too fast for me to keep up with. what is the general sentiment of the gruden people after todays presser?

I thought you were going to hang up and listen awhile. There are threads for hand-wringing and "woe is me" but this is not one of them.

I'm not "hand wringing" or espousing a "woe is me" attitude. I don't know where you get that out of any of my posts. I thought this thread was for discussing the pros and cons of a Jon Gruden hire at UT, not some kind of junior high school girl crush thread. But I guess I was wrong.

The guy has made a living talking the past few years. I'm sure he'll have no problem selling himself or the university.

I tend to agree but make no mistake that there is a lingo that goes with the sell job. Selling family on academics and other parts are huge as well. Those areas is where he will fall short for a period of time when you compare him to Saban and the likes.

Hello, I'm John Gruden. I coached in the NFL. Would you like to see my Super Bowl ring? I see talent in your son and I know that I can get the best out of him, shape him into a man, and allow him to make it to the NFL. Would you like to talk to Warren Sapp, one of my former players?

My thats some good pie Mrs.________. I can see where your son gets his talent and his looks.

Oh, is the glare off my Super Bowl ring blinding you? I can put it away if its distracting you

Believe it or not i just got back from a gathering with some friends. I saw some post about Raheem Morris way earlier. Can someone paraphrase or bump what was said which had folks pumped.

Sado IMO. Wow, not sure any hire would make you happy, youre convinced TN will never amount to anything...and if thats the case, the VOL on your name is highly offensive...plenty of teams to go root for...go find one that doesnt leave you feeeling so blue...

Uhhhh... as I said, I thought this was a thread for discussing the pro/cons of a Gruden hire. I have NEVER said we would never amount to anything, I just happen to disagree with the premise that JG would instantly make us prominent.

I said this ealier that grudens name get him in the living room but his recruiting skills would have to finish the job.

All I have are my opinions, but I'd be 100% confident in him sealing the deal.

Gruden is the kind of coach you'd run through a wall for and be happy to do it.

I just can't see a Rock Star on MNF in the NFL, a Super Bowl Championship ring on his finger and a man who actually knows X's and O's and you need the best Jimmy's and Joe's to win, struggling on the recruiting trail.

Super Bowl yeah. But having players talk to recruits is a NCAA violation if suggested by coach. It is ok only if player stumbles on contact info and calls the former player.

I get what you're saying to a point and if it were anyone else besides Gruden and they never coached college FB then I would agree. I have no doubt he will be fine on the recruiting trail.

He would instantly make us wayyyyyyy better than we are now. Not really debatable. We could argue the merits that he would come in and instantly be a Saban slayer, but there is NO question at all that he would be the best coach we've had since the General.

But the question is: does he WANT to do that? (I gave you your first thumbs up btw)

Doesn't matter if he was serious or not. All Saban has to do is present a recruit with the quote and say look what our competitors think about us. No doubt that quote about his subject is being used.

Anyway enough of that subject

I'm pretty sure recruits are smart enough to think that if they can't beat Texas A&M then they can't beat NFL teams and the comment was a joke. It's still a telling comment to how good Bama is by Spurrier, but it's not a recruiting tool, but whatever. That's my opinion, you have yours and we'll leave it at that.

Saban hire at Bama did not make them instantly prominent...or did it?
