At long last fans of the Tennessee Volunteers can coat the interiors of their homes with 'Big Orange' pride.
The Collegiate Licensing Company, Castle Sport/Premium Collegiate Colors, and the University of Tennessee have just launched UT branded paint for customers to purchase with fanfare and flourish at various Home Depot sites. This is the first time that a collegiate institution has ever licensed such a product.
The flourish came in the form of an array of promotional activities this past weekend at four area Home Depot locations (Centerline Drive, Kingston Pike, Shaad Road, and Foothills Mall Drive in Maryville). Fans of the university and its chosen color were treated to the opportunity to win Lady Vol basketballs and UT footballs autographed by head coaches Pat Summitt and Phillip Fulmer, respectively, as well as season tickets to the 2001 Lady Vols basketball season. Of course, a UT promotional would be incomplete without the jovial displays of Smokey the mascot, whose male incarnation was on hand at the east Home Depot location, and whose female counterpart goofed off with the consumers at the west location.
"It was a great time, we had quite a few people interested and they showed up early in some cases," said Kim Taylor, assistant Store Manager of Home Depot in east Knoxville. "The response was great, and everybody loved Smokey as usual. The interior paint comes in two styles, Satin and Semi-gloss, and we sold about 75 gallons."
That's $26 a gallon to possess the hue for the homeplace that until now has been applied to everything but the house. Todd Drew, Store Manager of the western location of Home Depot, also had a good turnout for the unveiling.
"We had a lot of people show up, as we expected, and they were pretty hyped-up. They loved it," Drew said.
Those who bought the paint probably had designs to redecorate their dens, or "bonus rooms"-anyplace where UT paraphernalia already abounded or the games are watched, Drew said.
This new product involves the alliance of several industry leaders. Sherwin Williams worked with Castle Sport/Premium Collegiate Colors to develop the applicable version of UT orange. The Home Depot will be the exclusive retailer of the paint. UT was CLC's #3 selling university for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2000. CLC has been UT's licensing representative since 1985.
"This has been a long time in coming," said Cory Moss, CLC's Senior Director of Properties. " Fans will finally have the opportunity to paint their dens and bedrooms in true Tennessee orange. We are excited about the launch of this landmark product for UT."
