From College Baseball Daily's Season Preview:

ETSU finished in last place at 8-16 in their first season back in the SoCon in 2015. The Bucs return 5 position starters and 3 of 4 starting pitchers.

At the plate ETSU is led by 4 all conference candidates senior 2B Trey York (.355, 75 H, 15 2B, 6 3B, 9 HR, 51 RBI, 18-21 SB), junior SS Chris Cook (.338, 77 H, 12 2B, 5 HR, 40 RBI), senior 1B Kevin Phillips (.323, 72 H, 21 2B, 10 HR, 55 RBI) and sophomore C Hagen Owneby (.310, 11 2B, 7 HR, 38 RBI).

Three starters who all logged 61.1 or more innings return with senior RHP Lee Haeberle (5-6, 6.97, 13 GS, 71.0 IP), sophomore RHP Ryan Simpler (2-5, 7.19, 9 GS, 61.1 IP) and senior RHP Griffin Krieg (2-8, 7.24, 12 GS, 73.1 IP, 60 K). Redshirt Sophomore RHP Dillion Cate (3-3, 5.72, 25 APP, 4 SV, 28.1 IP, 34 K) leads the returning bullpen arms.

The Bucs should have one of the best offenses in SoCon and maybe country but they will have to keep opponents off the score board and improve some ugly ERA’s to finish in top half of league.

CBD picks them to finish 8th, while D1 Baseball predicts a 6th place finish in the nine team conference.

Hagen Owenby is former Vol Drake Owenby's younger brother. He was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and made the SoCon All-Freshman team last season. This season he is leading the Bucs in Hits and RBI's. He was just named to the Johnny Bench Watch List.

ETSU is currently 7-5 with an RPI of 266. They've played one team with a winning record, Va. Tech and lost 11-0.

They can put up a lot of runs but starting pitching seems like a problem early on for the Bucs...sound familiar? Today's game will be a good atmosphere and with temps in the 70's, perfect baseball weather. Neither team has announced a starter, hopefully we get our bats back in working order...

As a casual baseball fan, really only interest is the Vols, what has happened to the team? Started off like gang busters. Disappointed to see them nose dive like this.

Most definitely. I thought the pitching would have to carry us at the start of the season and we'd be waiting for the bats to warm up. Getting the exact opposite.

There was a time when a 4.0 ERA would be okay, now it's last in the league, throw the injuries to Westphal, Serrano and Cox in that mix...

I've always had faith that CDS could get us out of pitching troubles, this may be a tall order this season. We're one key injury away from this being over before it starts.

That is what has surprised me. The pitching should be ahead of the batting at the beginning of the season, but as you said it has been the opposite.

I am interested in seeing how the Freshman does on the bump today. Sounds like Cox should be back soon, but what is the status on Westphal, I guess I have forgotten what the word was on him.

Pitcher had the lowest b/avg of all ETSU pitchers last season and so far this season. His ERA is 4.66...probably will also see Peyton Taylor, 2-0 on the season and 1.86 ERA. Haeberle a senior going up against Freshman Alex Harper Cook making his first start for UT.

On the radio Monday CDS said that Westphal was throwing and looked really good but also stated that there is a time table and I took it to mean we probably won't see him pitch this year. He also said that if there is a silver lining in Kyle's injury it's that he knows he'll have two good pitchers next year.

Just noticed Jammer Strickland is starting in RF for the Bucs today, he was a Vol for a little while.

2nd and 3rd basemen for the bucs have 4 errors a piece, combined for 8 of the team's 17.

Come on boys...no errors today...and focus on the base running...and a little help from the pitching and hitting...I guess that's it...:)
