Officials see rise in militia groups across U.S.

WASHINGTON – Militia groups with gripes against the government are regrouping across the country and could grow rapidly, according to an organization that tracks such trends.

The stress of a poor economy and a liberal administration led by a black president are among the causes for the recent rise, the report from the Southern Poverty Law Center says. Conspiracy theories about a secret Mexican plan to reclaim the Southwest are also growing amid the public debate about illegal immigration.

Bart McEntire, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, told SPLC researchers that this is the most growth he's seen in more than a decade.

"All it's lacking is a spark," McEntire said in the report.

Honestly, that thought just scares me. I'm all for people standing up and making a stand, but we are still a long way from desperate measures. Just get off your butt and make time on election day to vote your discourse. Of course, that means we need to have actual leaders run, which won't be a reality with the current two parties.

maybe thats what people are pissed about, maybe the system has become stagnant and needs a catlyst

The bad thing is that some of these groups my be 100% right. However because of the stranglehold that the current administration has on the media then these people will just be regarded as "nut jobs" or "tea-bagging rednecks"

It's my understanding that most "militias" are actually pretty benign. I'd bet you've had a lot more damage done by Ecofreaks over the years than a militia. The fear of course is that militias, pretty much by definition, give government hoplophobes spastic colons.

Toward the end it's almost like they are reaching to blame militia's even though openly conceding their own examples can't actually be tied to any such groups. Some people are nutcases, it's just that simple.

Most of the people generally associated with militias are either soldier wannabes or what we call "mall ninjas". Get together, bitch about the guvment, check out each others new camo, drink some beer, pop off some rounds, go home and catch the ballgame. The more serious ones might actually get together for meetings on voting and such.

In the end most of these people have families and jobs and aren't going to do anything that gets them dead or jailed unless they genuinely feel it's justified. To some extent I think the group mindset helps since one nutcase losing his job and blaming it on (insert president's name here) isn't going to convince the rest of them to storm the courthouse and may even keep said nutcase in check 'til he cools off. I do worry about the SW and some of the immigration issues. If something ugly goes down and the Feds step in to "maintain order" and their plan to do that is to disarm US citizens over the "rights" of what turns out to be, say, Mexican drug dealers...that could be your real spark.

Better hope these militias don't hook up with these town hall rabble rousers. Old women and fathers taking care of adult sons with cerebral palsy can be a dangerous bunch.

Instill some fear in the common folk. Don't worry the government will nuture and protect and give free health care too. Obamahood to the rescue!!

Pretty much expected with the number of people with out jobs. The ones hit the hardest are the ones straight out of high school.

I just wish TX would go ahead and claim to be independent from the union and become the Republic of TX, LOL
