The SC, UGA and Mizzou games came down to game winning drives that we failed to complete. We were THAT close to beating those three teams with one of the worst defenses ever.
At the time of the Vandy game, we had only won 4 games, so it's my belief that if we had won 8 or 9, then the team might actually have tried to win that game. I'm not so sure that Dooley didn't throw in the towel before either.
The Florida game that year snowballed pretty quickly because our defense was horrible. We were up by 7 midway through the 3rd with a horrible defense. That game could have easily had a different outcome.
Yes, we had a loser as a head coach, but we had one of the best offenses in the nation with a pretty good offensive coordinator. If you couple that with even an average defense, things could have changed drastically.
