A pair of bills introduced in the U.S. Senate would grant the White House sweeping new powers to access private online data, regulate the cybersecurity industry and even shut down Internet traffic during a declared "cyber emergency."

Senate bills No. 773 and 778, introduced by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.V., are both part of what’s being called the Cybersecurity Act of 2009, which would create a new Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor, reportable directly to the president and charged with defending the country from cyber attack.

A working draft of the legislation obtained by an Internet privacy group also spells out plans to grant the Secretary of Commerce access to all privately owned information networks deemed to be critical to the nation's infrastructure "without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule or policy restricting such access."

Jay Rockefeller D. W. Vir.

The bill, introduced by Sens. John Rockefeller and Olympia Snowe, would also give the government unprecedented control over computer software and Internet services, threatening innovation, freedom and privacy. CDT President and CEO Leslie Harris said, "The cybersecurity threat is real, but such a drastic federal intervention in private communications technology and networks could harm both security and privacy."

If we pass this law, everything posted to the internet will have government scrutiny.

Begs the question; if the Democrats screamed bloody murder about Bush admin wiretaps of terrorist suspects, what the heck are the dhimmitard sheeple thinking about this???

In a somewhat related bit of dhimi legislation: “President Obama and Vice President Biden will strengthen federal hate crimes legislation, expand hate crimes protection by passing the Matthew Shepard Act, and reinvigorate enforcement at the Department of Justice's Criminal Section.” President Obama is a large supporter of hate crimes legislation and certainly will not hesitate to sign this bill into law unless we act now!

While this new bill has not yet been given a new name or bill number, it is more dangerous to our Constitutional rights than other hate crimes bills that are also still pending. All hate crimes legislation is a direct threat to our religious liberties.

How do you say that in Austrian???

There's likely some legit need for something like this but if Bushie did it people would be screaming bloody murder about fascism and losing our civil rights --- a mad power grab by King George...

It wasn't for lack of trying on Bush's part...from the above post....

I would say parts of the Patriot Act came close to this.

Everything posted on the internet already has corporate and government scrutiny. This just allows more taxpayer money to be spent on some idiot who barely knows how to use a computer to have oversight over any information.

Government control of private broadband, here we come. Funny how the government controls encrypted information over a private, leased line being sent to a server in ... Sweden, for instance.

We can't say what we want in the town square, over the radio or on the TV... the internet was bound to fall eventually.

A big waste of money and another way to pry into your everyday lives.

once they get control of this, i wonder how long before they start forcing taxes on internet purchases. i'd like to know where the dems are complaining about this. they railed again Bush monitoring phone calls made to terruist groups. i love the hypocrisy of the traitorous left.

"without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule or policy restricting such access."
quote]

I must admit that is not a phrase that I like seeing in any piece of legislation allowing government intrusion. I would also have to agree with some other posters that such wording from a bill produced by the Bush administration would have led to the majority of the country's major media outlets being immediately splattered with ape feces from all of the journalist's bowels detonating in unison. A Nexus search would probably have produced the largest one day usage of the term "fascist" ever recorded.

Since this is the Obama administration however, this is the first I've heard of it.
