The posters who were criticizing the Strong hire are now the same ones freaking out that he may not come here. Gotta love our rational fans.

I don't give Shiv if he comes here or not. He is still not a home run. He is a fall back option. I think with that said that he deserves a chance but if he doesn't come here we are no worse off. Screw him!

People are going to complain no matter who it is, I hope they announce it soon. I can't take the conspiracies anymore! Lol

Actually there are many posters who were initially critical of the possible hiring of Strong who are still critical of the possibility.

There ARE NO homerun hires. People think there are but every hire has risks. Weis, Kragthorpe, Rich Rod, Neuheisel, Hawkins, Mike Sherman, O'Brien, and many more were ALL considered "homerun" hires at some point or another.

The ONLY thing that made Gruden more attractive than any of the guys currently being discussed was his "star power" and the effect it "MIGHT" have on recruiting. I say "might" because he'd have to make it stick this year. By next year, he'd be just another coach knocking on doors unless he surprised the world and won 10+ games next fall.

College coaching and NFL coaching are not the same. NFL teams have what maybe 20 coaches for 50 some players? College has 10 for 85 scholarship players plus walk ons... and they have to do the recruiting too. The time commitment is different. The players are different. Building a team is different. The style of play is different. They are also expected to be babysitters and teach these young guys how to be "behaved" and mature men. In the NFL, you fire trouble makers if you need to and replace them with someone just as good.

I would have liked to have seen Gruden if for nothing more than the novelty of it. But I was NEVER delusional enough to believe anyone was a "homerun/sure bet" hire. To do so would be to deny the realities that history teaches us.

I like Strong as a possibility. I think that if he actually did turn Hart down this morning as I've heard Bill King is reporting then we need to step back and take a look at the University and Athletic Department and start fixing whatever needs to be fixed. I know some issues have already been identified and are supposed to be addressed but if it's true that Strong turned down Tennessee to stay at Louisville then I would be very interested to know why (I do understand that Strong is not going to share that info) because there is no way you stay at Louisville when given the opportunity to coach at UT unless there are some significant concerns about the direction of the program, IMO. Some jobs and towns yes, but not Louisville.

Fulmer ran the program into the ditch. He is the reason we are where we are.

Thanks for the good times. Thanks for the devotion. NO THANKS to being the next coach.

I would like to understand how we could do worse than what we have been doing? Charlie Strong may have been in weaker conf. , but he had a great defense at F.S.U. and that is where we need improvement. The goal is to compete week in and week out, i dont know if that will happen or not but how can we do worse than what we have. The judgements need to be held until we really get the chance to see what happens. I still would like to know how we could do any worse than what we have done, the past three years have been horrible, we need to get what ever deal done and get to recruiting and go play volunteer football, which simply means to me being able to compete in the SEC.

UL is moving to a new conference and will get better exposure going forward. UL publicly stated that they want to keep Strong and will make him the highest paid coach in CFB to do it.

Those are two pretty good reasons.

But on the sentimental side, he's a guy who thinks he was passed over because of his mixed marriage and probably other reasons he feels were unmerited. UL gave him a shot. There would have to be some sense of appreciation and loyalty there.

Fulmer hasn't been here the last 4 years. No rational person would believe things would have been this bad if he has stayed.

This. Dooley ran this program into the ditch. Fulmer Got Fired with one bad season and a season Removed from an SEC East Championship. His downfall was the Clawfence. Given another opportunity to succeed, I have no doubt he would.

Excellent points I hadn't thought about. Thanks!

UT went to 3 SEC Championship Games in his last 7 years. Most rational fans would enjoy another run like that.

Not saying I think he should be re-hired but I don't understand the folks who want to trash a first ballot Hall of famer and a True Volunteer and act like he ran the program into a ditch.

Of course, most of those folks also think Kiffin was a great coach and that UT should hire Petrino.
