Ohio State recruit scores 77 points in overtime win
Saturday, January 14, 2006
FROM STAFF REPORTS

Jon Diebler, an Ohio State basketball recruit who plays for Upper Sandusky, scored 77 points last night in a 105-100 overtime win over host Tiffin Columbian.

Diebler, a 6-foot-7 junior guard, made 22 of 42 shots from the field and 27 of 28 free throws. He made 12 of 13 free throws in overtime as Upper Sandusky (5-3) outscored Tiffin 16-10 to win a Northern Ohio League game.
At one point in the third quarter, Diebler made four threepoint baskets in 56 seconds to turn a 52-43 deficit into a 57-54 lead.

"I am the point guard, so it’s my job to get everybody involved. But they were laying off me, so I was obviously going to shoot," Diebler told the Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune. "I wasn’t really thinking about it. The shots were just falling."
Diebler’s points are the seventh highest in Ohio highschool history. It was the most points in a game since Bellaire St. John Central’s Alan Hornyak, who later starred at Ohio State, scored 86 in 1969. Dick Bogenrife of Sedalia Midway set the state record of 120 in 1953.

Diebler originally committed to Valparaiso, where his brother plays. Ohio State offered him a scholarship after his showing in last year’s state tournament. He scored 32 points in the Division II final, which Upper Sandusky won, and 29 in a semifinal.

Diebler’s game overshadowed Josh Moore’s 52 points for Tiffin. A 6-1 guard, he made 19 of 23 shots from the field and 13 of 16 free throws.

Nothing like scoring 52 yourself and no one notices!

Quite a team they've got there in Upper Sandusky. 5-3 with a player who can score 77 in a game, and you still have to go to overtime to win.

Buckeye fans are quite excited about their recruiting class coming in next year.

Thad Motta has been a godsend to The Ohio State University.

If they are going to win next year is the year... Greg Oden will be gone after his first year for sure... I wonder if they'll win in basketball and football

Motta has been a winner everywhere he went. He turned around the Butler program and made them a NCAA Trny. team yearly. The guy can flat out recruit with the best of them. As long as his ties in Indiana keeps getting him this states best talent instead of them going to IU or Purdue he'll continue to win at OSU.

Their basketball team will have an easier time winning any kind of championship next year over the football team.

The losses from football team are massive, literally their entire defense is gone.

I don't think the basketball team will win the NC next year either... bunch of people are puttin' an awful lot of stock in several kids that haven't even graduated high school yet...

Yeah..UNC has a slightly better class coming in next yr and I just cant seeing either team contending for the first yr or two..it takes time..and some from both classes will prolly only be there a yr or two.
