Ok who would you chose out of these 9

Gruden is my top guy, but out of those guys other than him, I'd probably choose Gary Patterson. He's a defense first kinda guy and he has turned TCU into a good job

1. Gary Patterson. Pros: .773 winning percentage; Defensive side of the ball; rising Cons: One school; non-SEC conference; declining? Scenario: Recruit at least Bray & Hunter; Retain CJC, CJG, & CSM on Offense; Show your defensive expertise in the SEC and turn the ship in year 1; Retain CJP; Secure TN borders and build deeper HS coach relationships THEN find the kids nationally that want to play for VOLS.

2. Charlie Strong. Much the same as Patterson. Shorter track record, but seems to have more buzz surrounding him. Scenario: Come show FL they made a mistake and prove you belong in the SEC. Doesn't break the bank and $$$ are an issue at TN now just like recruiting landscape is not the same as it was for CFP.

I like John Adams observation about not being able to recruit & beat UA, GA, SC, FL at their own game - strong D & power running approach. WE ALREADY HAVE AN ARIAL ATTACK IN CHANEY & GRAHAM MAKES OUR RUN GAME BETTER; maybe not as prolific as Petrino; but way more character demonstrated. Do the math: CJC + CJG > CBP.

Gruden? Who cares!

Stoops? To expensive but another good defensive background with SEC experience and an opportunity to play with the big names in the SEC.

3. Beyond Stoops, Patterson, and Strong I think you are into second tier at least from a perception standpoint.

Patterson. Even then I am sometimes iffy about him. Something makes me think he is a bit timid of big boy football.

Wow...another "Hey look at me" thread. It's not like the other 1000 threads about this was enough...no way. There's always room for one more...

1. Gruden
2. Patterson
3. Strong
And if we had too....
4. Fisher, but just not impressed with what hes done, with the talent he has, playing in a weak conference.

1. Gruden
2. Patterson
3. Butch Davis (I know he isn't on the list, but he is about to be cleared of any wrongdoing at NC and he can rebuild a program)
4. Strong
5. Fisher

Out of those, I see the chances of Patterson coming as significantly less than the others. It's been pointed out that he may be waiting for Mack Brown to retire and take a shot at landing the Texas gig. Fisher has also stated his lack of interest in other opportunities.

I've said it before, but if all of those guys say no (I don't see that happening, though):
A: something is terribly wrong inside the Athletic Department and
B: give the job to Jim Chaney (go ahead, attack away) and focus on getting a proven Defensive Coordinator. Chaney clearly has a rapport with the players and looked more like a Head Coach in one game than Dooley did in 3 years. I'm not sure if Chaney has any aspirations of being a Head Coach, but someone will give him the chance if he does.

You know thinking logically after Gruden---I'd want Petrino provided he had a strong defensive coordinator. I don't think Petrino will be getting a job in the SEC at least this year. OCI speculated Colorado--which I agree with.

Agree with except the change I made at bottom.

If Gruden is totally out of the window ... I would take Petrino. He did wonders for Arkansas. Imagine what he would do with a power house like Tennessee.

You should ask, "who would you pick out of these guys...other than Gruden."

Patterson is just an outstanding football coach. He's a sure-thing for success. Maybe not National Championships every year, but he'd definitely have us back as one of the top two teams in the east, at least.
I'd take Davis over Strong or Fisher. I'd take Butch Jones over Al Golden...I think.
