Okla. conservatives debate divorce legislation - Yahoo! News

Republican members proposed three pieces of legislation imposing new regulations on marriage and divorce in Oklahoma. Two of the measures were defeated, but another — requiring counseling for those planning to wed, and therapy sessions for couples considering divorce — is awaiting action.

Opinions on this? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

I don't like the idea of government being involved in these types of issues. That being said if people were to do this on their own it would be a very good idea.

I think its ok as long as it is done at the state level. I would not want the fed govt getting involved in this kind of thing.

Government needs to stay out of it, state and federal. Next thing we know we will all be subsidizing people to work on their marriage.

Like KB said though, it is a good idea for people to do it on their own.

Mehhh, dont like the idea of the government telling me that I have to have counseling before I marry. My big question with this is who has to pay for said counseling and therepy? Is it the intention that this will be paid by the individual or is this something that the taxpayers will be funding?

My guess is it will be subsidized by the taxpayer, otherwise you are going to have a lot of people crossing state lines to get married.

Government just has no place here.

Nanny state, conservative style. Doesn't matter what level of government (federal, state, local), this is a misuse.

Counseling before marriage would be a good idea, I think it would stop a lot of young dumba$$es from making a mistake that has the potential to ruin the rest of their lives.

Maybe it shouldn't be required for people outside of their 20s with careers.

Government should be out of the marriage business, that includes using justices of the peace.

If two dumbasses want to get married I'm not sure counseling will change their minds. That's why they are idiots to begin with. I certainly wouldn't want to pay for it either.

The gubment has no business getting into marriage on any level!

I usually kill democrats for being anti freedom but this time these republicans need to be shown the boot!

they could solve all of the problems if they just banned marriage for anyone under 25.

Ya Gov't should definitely be completely out of the marriage business (both hetero and same sex), but if anything this is the level these debates should be taking place is at the state/local level. With that said if my state reps/senators voted 'yes" on this bill I would definitely be giving a vote to the other guy come next term to fire them. Of course as always the people who call this nanny state-ism but then think it's a good idea for the government to track our power usage, or ban smoking in private places, etc are hilarious to watch comment on these things (and vice versa).

They should just require everyone to get married in the catholic church, since they are already require this.

Bible belt politics. Here in Ok the church bases have a voice heard at the capitol. It was reported by local news that we have the highest divorce rate nationally, that doesn't sit well. Seek Michael DelGiorno's (spelling?) opinion of Oklahoma's infrastructure/politics...he used to be a radio personality in the Tulsa area, relocated to a Nashville radio station a few months after I arrived in Tulsa.

actually it makes some sense. If the churches are so worried about who they are marrying then require classes to use their facilities. Sure people would go other places but then they could claim it wasn't the church's fault.

He is an ultra-right wing conservative. I have listened to him on the way to work a number of times. He isn't as truthful as I would like and he takes things out of context on a regular basis.

I wouldn't seek his opinion on anything

Ya he's the right's answer to the Rachel Madow and Olberman (spelling?). He is very shrill and very religious and unashamed of such. I respect his convictions but I don't listen to him much, because Obama is the not the cause of all of life's ills currently. Yes, I don't agree with any of his policy thus far, but he is not Satan incarnate.

I should have made myself clear. I did'nt mean to suggest him as an unblemished sacrafice. I simply suggested him on the basis he had been in Tulsa, had a negative opinion on the way Tulsa politics are, and that it might shed some light on why the divorce rate might be so high here as well as the bill and how folks would react to it.

so government intrusion is fine... just as long as it's' on the state level.. This is too good. You only like it because a republican introduced it. This is why politics fail in this country.
