  • 1902 - John McGraw was named manager of the New York Giants, a job he would hold for thirty years.

  • 1909 - Ed Summers of the Detroit Tigers pitched all eighteen innings of a 0-0 tie with the Washington Senators, the longest scoreless game in American League history.

  • 1920 - Babe Ruth broke his own season record of twenty-nine homers with his thirtieth as the New York Yankees beat the St. Louis Browns 5-2. Ruth would finish the season with fifty-four.

  • 1941 - Joe DiMaggio extended his hitting streak to fifty-six games with a 3-for-4 day as the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 10-3.

  • 1948 - After 8 1/2 years as Brooklyn manager, Leo Durocher stunned baseball by becoming manager of the Giants in midseason.

  • 1969 - Rod Carew stole home off Chicago's Jerry Nyman in the Minnesota Twins' 6-2 victory. It was Carew's seventh steal of home for the year and last, one shy of the Major League / American League record set by Ty Cobb in 1912.

  • 1970 - The Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 before 48,846 in the first game at Three Rivers Stadium.

Funny, but I was a Dodger fan when I was a kid in the 50's. The Duke, Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson, Campanella, Furillo, Newcombe, etc. The Boys of Summer.

I'll be seeing this year's edition of the Dodgers twice in the three game set in Baltimore starting Monday. I'll say a prayer for them for you.;)
I will be watching all 3 games on T.V. MLB Network Monday and Wednesday and on TBS Tuesday. Orioles should have World Series in 79 they were loaded on offense and pitching was really good. Mike Flanagan,Jim Palmer,Scott McGregor was a good front three of starters.....

I loved the day this guy left the Cardinals to play for the Braves. One of the best 3rd base players to play the game. He brought a lot of leadership & class to the Braves organization.
He was pretty great on those early 90s Braves teams.
