I’m not so sure that Franklin wouldn’t have gone to PSU even if he had to take a pay cut. Even removing the fact that Franklin is a Pennsylvania native & PSU was essentially a “dream job” type destination his ambition to be head man at a traditional power program was always going to make his time at Vandy temporary. I remember his last season @ Vandy they went to the swamp and beat Florida handily. The next week they played Kentucky @ the Dudley Dump and the UK fans outnumbered the “Vandy fans” nearly 2:1. Not that it takes any insider info to come to the conclusion that when Franklin looked in the stands and saw all that blue he had to realize that he was fighting a losing battle but I had a prominent Vandy booster who was (and still is ) close to Franklin tell me that he had told him as much. Vandy had also beaten #15 Georgia a few weeks prior so you would have thought that Vandy could have at least been able to scrounge up 25,000 to 30,000 people in the stands to at least give the appearance that there was real excitement surrounding their football program. All those doctors and lawyers Vandy turns out and they couldn’t put $20M in James Franklin’s pocket to stay there. Priorities.
Damn yeah I forgot that! Then PSU just removed from possibly the biggest scandal in CFB history , a scandal involving sexual abuse no less goes and hires a guy who was having to give depositions in a trial involving a gang rape. Horrible optics all around .He was also facing the publicity of a rape trial that year that he needed to leave in the rear view mirror.

Damn VSF, I had forgotten about that WF crowd. I knew in the back of my mind that I was forgetting one that was really egregious and that was it ! I remember the week before sitting in my spot in Q34 , cold as hell IIRC &seeing that spot call overturned to cap off another craptacular season with yet another L to frickin Vandy. That year about the only thing to celebrate , other than beating uscjr coached by the “Ol ball sack” was knowing that Vandy was losing a once in a lifetime coach and observing their fans melting down when Franklin bolted to Happy Valley . LOL! Good times !!I remember Franklin made a comment after the UK game about being disappointed in the crowd, and then the week after beating UT they had Senior Day against Wake Forest and I think they had 30K at the game and it was an 11:00 AM CST start time. When they did the Senior intros there was probably like 15K there and that really pissed of Franklin and he said something in the post game about how it was a shame nobody showed up to send these seniors off since they were the winniest class in modern history. After that I knew he wasn't sticking around because he had reached the peak at Vandy.
