On the bright side - Uros stepped up today!

UP came to play. Consistently pinned Tshiebwe down low (showing why Oscar isn't a coveted NBA player). Would have liked to have seen a better rebounding effort, not just from him, but all our bigs, but Uros brought the fire and intensity, for sure.
Uros is never an outstanding rebounder for some reason? When I watched Uros closely, it appeared his mission was to attempt to block Tshiebwe from getting the rebound instead of getting the rebound himself. What I’d really like to know is why ON can go from a single rebound in one game to 10 rebounds the next to 2 the next?

Doesn’t have the motor or the desire. Those are 2 things that have to be innately part of your makeup. At this point in his career, no matter how much Barnes pleads, prods, begs or incentivizes Nkamhoua, you’re just not going to get it from him nightly. If we can get 8 points, 6 boards and a reasonable amount of hustle tonight from our most athletic big, we probably win.

Play Awaka more going forward because you know what you’re going to get each night, if nothing else. You just can’t plan and scheme with any confidence around ON.

I like you would have liked to see a better rebound ratio (43 to 23). One example of how this game went was Vescovi makes a great steal goes up court sees 3 vols in the lane & 1 UK guy decides to take the 3 that he usually hits. Maybe good decision you either get 3 or a miss most likely is rebounded and put back for 2. The ball bounced off rim went directly to the UK player. Was that kind of day 10 missed layups/bunnies, missed 3s we normally hit, rebound discrepancies and on and on. Somedays like this will happen in a long season.

Yes, days like this will happen, and when they do we stand a chance of taking the loss. The question becomes, how do you hedge these things that went wrong and leverage them into a win? It goes back to one thing per my previous post. We don’t need a superstar performance to win today, we just need more hustle from Olivier.

I was impressed with Uros. He was the only one that decided to show up. Oscar is a horrible defender. I remember Fulkerson blowing by him multiple times from the top of the key one game. Next game we play we either need to feed the post or screen to get him matched up on the ball away from the basket for the mismatch.

Would we have lost if UP scored 20 and we hadn’t missed 7 layups? He only missed 2 attempts IIRC. Don’t think UP scoring had anything to do with our other offensive woes.

"This" and were beaten by foul differential (along with the KY insane FT make %). Another thing that bothers me is the "lady like" way we try put backs at times. For a team that is supposed to be "rough and tumble" we sure look like pussy cats at times trying a rebounded second underneath put back. I also think, with our size, we should be attacking the basket more, not little running or hopping up little 3-6 footers,, SLAM THE DAM- THING DOWN!!

Kentucky gave up Uros going 1 on 1 and guarded the 3. If they would have double teamed Uros, we would have had more open looks. Barnes will need to adjust for game 2
What has Uros ever done to make a team double team him? Dudes a role player who’s been nothing more than a banger. If I’m playing UT, Uros is the last guy I’m worrying about beating me. He has shown some glimpses of an offensive this year but continues to revert back to his bumbling ways. Hope this gets him over the hump and he can become more reliable.

But it makes no difference when you are shooting the % we did FROM more than 12 feet. YOU GONNA LOSE!!

What I don't grasp is why we seem to have a hard rule that only one post player per game max is allowed to produce. It's like the basketball version of the shell game. The pea is hidden under one shell at a time and it moves. This game Plavi had the pea. WTH is going on with ON and his disappearing act? A guy with a physique like his being so timid at times. Guy could be a real physical presence but get in a big game and he's just as likely to vanish. Just don't get it.

That's the plan others have used. We've seen it in the regular season and in the tournament. Teams that have the horses to man up and be physical on the perimeter will do it and take their chances with our front court. Much like football. Get up on our WRs and make someone else beat you. Beat up on Vescovi and don't let him catch a breath. Be physical as hell and dirty the game up. Take your chances with UTs front court. That's the recipe for beating us.

Def deserves more time especially in a game where we were destroyed on the boards (39 to 21 total and 10 to 3 offensive) with Awaka only playing 6 min while Aidoo and ON gave you nothing for a combined 28 min. Add in terrible play from our 3 best players and it is shocking we were even in the game at the end (taking care of the ball in the 2nd half really helped but still).

If Uros would take his temper and aggression to the defensive end he could be a decent player . Always getting smoked on defense and can’t get a rebound .

It’s not so much being physical with our perimeter players, it’s the length and athleticism that bothers them. ZZ, Santi, and Key are all small guards and nobody is going to confuse Santi and Key as good athletes. ZZ is really quick but he is so small that it’s hard for him to even get a jumper off. Not to mention none of those 3 look to finish around the rim (or scare you enough to beat you consistently). So you play those guys to pass and force them to finish amongst the trees. Those are the teams that really bother us and give us fits.

Uros has the best post up game of our 3 bigs. When he is on he can score. The flip side of this is 3 rebounds in 25 minutes and 25 minutes of average defense at best.

I’ve been impressed the last few games with Aidoo’s post offense. He’s shown a very nice short hook shot. I’m no coach, but Aidoo appears to get less minutes when the other team has physically stronger post players. That should even out as he continues to add strength

After Uros was the leading scorer yesterday that made 7 different players that have been leading scorer in at least 1 game during the 17 game schedule to this point.
Aidoo, Maschack & Awake are the 3 that haven’t led. JJJ not played many games but he was co-leader with 15 in 1 game.
That shows a lot of balance.

Balanced attack but no "go-to" player that will take charge of a game. Philips will be that guy next year.

JJJ should have been that player this year, and may still be by Feb.

If you ever watch him, you notice he hardly ever watches the ball once it is close to the rim. He’s more interested in facing up with a defender instead of boxing out. I really expected him to be a double double guy this year. Needless to say, if he can start putting up 12-15 a game from here on out, we will be just fine. Defense will still be there as a whole.
