Was it really a penalty? It looked as if the center just snapped the ball on the wrong count and the rest of the team was surprised. Is that really a penalty these days, or was the ref protecting the Bama QB from getting popped with no one blocking?

Think it’s considered a false start on the center.

No it’s not, false start is a flinch out of stance causing the illusion that the play has started.

Snap infraction, which was called, is when the center moves the ball and it’s not snapped.

Poorly snapping the ball off count isn’t a penalty, refs blew it dead to protect bama.

I was at the game and watching the center due to our offsides - he actually did do a double take on it I believe. Which is probably the right call them? Idk
It was the other aggregious misses that piss me off!

Wow. Well that makes an already suspiciously called game even worse. I’m sure heupel and co will submit replays and complaints but nothing will happen. Absolutely infuriating.

There are actually designed plays where the center snaps the ball, but the other offensive linemen remain motionless. It’s a rare play, but I’ve seen those plays called two or three times by teams.

It would have been a fumble by any other team, but since it was Bama the refs had to help them avoid the turnover or loss of significantly more than 5 yards….

It wasn't a penalty because it didn't penalize them. It was a premature snap that milroe wasn't ready for. Instead of him gathering the snap with no one to handoff or throw it to and taking a loss where it would've been like 2nd and 14, the ref blew it dead so instead it would be 1st and 15 which is better for them. The only flag thrown on them for the entire duration of the game was one to help them. I wouldn't even call it a penalty, it was thrown by the official to help them bail them out and to minimize the damage of a mistake by them.
