I enjoyed researching and putting together a couple of posts about him a few years back. I can link them:

The Head Coach -- Part 4 -- The General

The Head Coach -- Part 4b

He was a treasure.

Go Vols!
I had forgotten about these posts - they need to be standard reading for all people that visit VolNation !!!

My own Gen'rul story - I used to work with two Vandy grads. One played DE in the early 2000s and the other LB when Franklin was there.
Used to tick them off because at my desk, which was close to theirs and they had to walk by to get to and from the coffee machine, I had the preface quote from the football as a war game book. "In 1926, the University of Tennessee hired Robert Reese Neyland to do one thing - beat Vanderbilt."
Of course below that, I placed Neyland's record against Vandy of 19-3.

Who is the most famous athlete you share a birthday with?
I used this site https://www.onthisday.com/sport/birthdays

Among the notables on my list (at least people I kind of recognized):
Buck Leonard - early baseball pioneer
Anthony Davis - HOF RB from USC
Maurice Cheeks - NBA guard
Gerald Williams - NFL DE
Gil Meche - MLB
Matt Barkley - NFL QB
