While the 2012 data marks a slight improvement, the outlook for food affordability is not favorable. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently said drought conditions, which have affected nearly half the country, will raise food prices for consumers even higher than they would already increase because of inflation.

how many of those have given up cable, internet, smart phones, etc?

sorry but until a person makes every effort to make their budget work I have a hard time being sympathetic.

This X100

I have no sympathy for anyone who says they don't have the means to eat when they are pouring money into non-essential items.

the whole "food security" mindset is utter garbage.

If we'd mete out welfare according to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and cap it per recipient, I'd feel better about it. As it stands, stats like these are slammed together wantonly, boosted x% and put out there in an effort to justify our bloated programs. I want to hurl, but that might be because I ate too much this morning.

Yep.

I feel the same way about the government. Of course you have to set a budget before you you can make it work.

I guess they figure their cable, internet, and retirement plans are secure, who's worried about the rest.

If twenty percent of America was going without food....wouldn't we all know hungry people?

20% is bull****.

You can use this same argument for welfare, food stamps, extended unemployment, etc.

The social safety net is suppose to keep you alive; not to artificially support the standard of living you think you are entitled to.

Just fed a family of 5 under 10 bucks. Its called home cooking.

I was at a grocery store in San Diego and they were encouraging shoppers to buy these brown paper bags with non-perishable dinner items for just $5. The grocer would then deliver it to the food bank to feed a family. Amazing idea because of the convenience. I would buy that every time I went grocery shopping if we had it here.

pinto beans, rice, cornbread and sliced tomatoes

You can have the rice but some good pinto beans with some onion, corn bread and a big ole glass of ice cold milk is hard to beat.
