Every time a potential coaching candidate loses a game with his current team... there is an immediate outcry in VolNation to disqualify him from being the next coach of our UT Vols:
Charlie Strong's Louisville team loses to UCONN.... therefore he would be a horrible choice.
Jimbo Fisher's FSU team loses to Florida.... therefore he would be a horrible choice.
Jim Mora Jr. most likely will lose to Stanford.... therefore he is a horrible choice.
Then we shouldn't even mention Dan Mullen, James Franklin, and many others... they have lost over 4 games this year.
You get my point....
So what exactly are we saying? A recent loss disqualifies anyone? Chip Kelly wouldn't be qualified because he lost to Stanford? Many NFL teams would disagree.
So are we using the same logic to when qualifying Gruden as our next head coach? Gruden was 4-12, 9-7, and 9-7 in his last three years at Tampa Bay.
In the spirit of full discretion... I hope that Jon Gruden is our next coach. BUT... as a fanbase... we need to be smarter than what we are showing the nation right now. A coaching candidate is not simply defined by his most recent loss or win. The ability to recruit, be an ambassador for UT, hire a quality staff, and LOVE the University of TN... are all crucial pieces of the puzzle. Would LSU have hired Nick Saban if they simply looked at his record at Michigan State? Probably not.
All I am saying is... There are some great candidates out there... but some of them may not have perfect records. Not everyone coaches a team full of 4-star and 5-star athletes. Sometimes games just get away from you. But I truly believe that UT is a premier job... and the right candidate can sell our program to elite athletes. But this time... we just need to make sure that the coach we hire can coach.
