I have to claim ignorance on this guy. Don't know much about him. I have asked a number of people about him as a coach, and I've heard everything ranging from "He's a great coach," to "That guy's the most overrated coach in that nation."

I have no idea which of the statements is closer to the truth, so I am asking here. What say you, Vol fans? Great coach, good coach, average coach, bad coach, horrible coach?

I don't know enough to form much of an opinion. Some people swear he's a genius, but his record at Cal isn't what I'd call great though.

All,

Tedford is a great coach and great recruiter. Our recruiting class was only 2nd to USC this year. Since he has come to Cal, we've been to a bowl game every year. That never happened in Berkeley. His teams are well coached. We are rarely penalized and our special teams are also excellent now, both weak points under other coaches. He'll sit a guy if he fumbles. He makes them think about it. And if anyone has ties to your coaching staff, Tedford will pull a trick play usually early in the first half, usually a half back pass. All I care about is that the team play hard, they play up for every game, every down. They really bring it now. Something you guys in Tenn. probably have had for a long time, but in Berkeley, football hasn't always been a priority.

I can guarantee the Bears might be rated a little high nationally, but we have loads of talent in the right places, if our DB's can hold down the big play over the top (not many college DB's are good at that) we will be in the game. If we don't turn the ball over and run it efficiently (Tedford loves to run), we should beat you guys. That said, I know Cal will have to play a great game to win on the road against such a national power as Tenn. Tedford knows this, the team knows this, you should get our best game...;-))))

With Tedford... Look at the records of the teams he coached. Also consider the states of Oregon and California before his arrival.

Oregon (Offensive Coordinator): 38-10 record (also averaged 33 ppg)
California (Head Coach): 33-17 (also averaged 34.4 ppg)

Oregon was just decent before he got there, became a serious contender while he was there, and has not been quite that good since. California is the only team not to win at least a share of the Pac-10 title in the last 16-17 years (I think) and were pretty much miserable for quite some time. Now they are looking at finally getting one for the first time in a while.

There's also the matter of the college careers (and I emphasize the COLLEGE part) of the quarterbacks he's coached. Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, Kyle Boller Aaron Rodgers. That's a good list considering they were almost all consecutive for Tedford.

Jeff Tedford has built up a decent resume, but his national attention is a little hyped. A smart man on this board reminded me that Tedford has 1 actual meaningful win. One. If he beats UT on September, I think thats 2.

He's having trouble naming a starting QB right now. I was confident Longshore would win that job, but I was wrong. As of right now, they will be rotating QBs (we know how well that works - worked in 2004 due to separate style QBs, backfired in 2005 with same style QBs).

Thanks... I think.

Didn't some of the NFL teams take a pass on Tedford? I know his name popped up in the media for various openings.

That said, he has done something at CAL. Even them learning to beat the bottom half of the Pac10 on a consistent basis is a dramatic improvement over prior years.

I personally think his time at Cal will not be much longer. It is hard to imagine that a elite school won't take a shot at getting him soon. I've heard his name mentioned along with Carr curses by Michigan fans. Texas A&M will probably be in the hunt for a coach after this year. Larry Coker is on the hot seat and that job sounds ideal for Tedford. Even something like Mich State or Illinois might be attractive.

Not that I am in favor of it..but someone dropped Tedford's name as a replacement for CPF after this season if things don't go well. At least, I seem to remember that being said after the 1st scrimmage. Of course, a lot was said after the 1st scrimmage! :)

That is the nicest thing anyone has said about UT in a long time. Unfortunately this is not "national power" Tennessee. This is "the 8-4 would be a good record" version of Tennesee. Being facetious will only get you so far on this board by the way.

I think the recruiting services put Cal's class just inside the top 10. Their first visit there... and the first year UT has been out of the top 10 in awhile.

Rivals - 19
Scout - 23

I saw somewhere an article that took all the major publications/websites that did recruiting rankings, and the cumulative standing for Cal's 2006 class was 23rd, one ahead of UT's 24th. Cal was rated as the 4th best in the PAC 10.

I'm pretty sure Cal recently gave Tedford a big new contract. Either that, or they are working on one. I don't think they'll let him get away too easily. Not that I'd want him, anyway.

I know it's "just the pac 10" but I think Mich State or Illinois is a step down from Cal

Yeah... Cal is starting to get more excited about a return to football prominence for the first time in what... 60 years? I tend to think UCB will pull out the stops to get Tedford to the top.

The problem with consistently winning in the Pac-10 is the revolving door of which teams are the best. In other conferences in the country, you have the same teams who are usually at the top of their conference. In the Pac-10, every team except Cal has won at least a share of the conference title since 1992. That's crazy parity and provides a very tough time winning consistently.

It can be done in short stretches like USC is currently doing. Cal has a good program starting again, good location, plenty of in-state talent... I see no reason why Tedford can't elevate the program. A possible departure anywhere short of somewhere like Miami would be a step down.
