Former USC player Bob DeMars has told Time Sports magazine that he was verbally assaulted repeatedly by Orgeron for leaving practice early to attended a required statistics class once a week. DeMars said Orgeron called him a name too crude to repeat here.
He made me feel like a bad person for going to class, DeMars said.
While calling Orgeron a great coach, DeMars says Orgeron was foul-mouthed and abusive. Now a filmmaker, DeMars is planning a movie questioning the direction of college sports.
When I signed with USC, no one said good luck on your degree. No one said go to school and get good grades. Youre not a student-athlete, DeMars said. Youre an athlete student.
Former college athletes who have sued the NCAA filed a federal court lawsuit Tuesday, asking $5 million from a company that sells photos of college players online. The defendants is Professional Photo Store Fronts, owned by Brand Affinity Technologies. The players say the company sold their pictures online without their permission. The lawsuit accuses 90 university athletics departments of promoting the sale of the players images.
In another federal lawsuit, former UCLA basketball player Ed OBannon and others have accused Electronic Arts and Collegiate Licensing Company with using their images in video games sold to the public. That lawsuit asks millions of dollars in compensation from EA, CLC and the NCAA.
Ponderings
Why do I have a nagging suspicion that the NBA championship series is fixed? That San Antonio could lose to Miami by 19 points in Game 2, then beat Miami by 36 in Game 3 seems screwy to me. It makes no sense.
When major league baseball commissioner Bud Selig steps down next year, Id like to see the owners choose a successor from the following candidates: Veteran Bob Costas who loves the game, Texas Rangers owner Nolan Ryan, Andy McPhail former U.S. president and ex-Rangers owner George W. Bush, and former manager and front office exec Frank Robinson.
