Now I'm certainly no Defensive coordinator, and I also have great respect for Chavis, but here's what I saw:

We setup in a zone defense, didn't get any pressure on Russell, and he picked us apart.

Question: Should we have played man coverage and brought the heat around the ends, forcing a bad throw??

I really think we should have brought more heat on them there :ermm:

It seems to pretty obvious to me that we should have brought pressure on Russell. He had enough time back there to balance his checkbook. With that said, I'm putting that game behind me and looking forward to next week.

I hate Zone!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry but I watched zone D sink my two teams this weekend (Vols and Falcons)

On 4th and 8 we should have played man and brought the house. Then again they are getting paid the big bucks to call plays.

You can bring heat all you want, but our blitzes were getting picked up for most of the game and as gassed as the defense was at the end of the game, I think we could have brought all 11 and not gotten to the QB.

On the TV screen sitting at home, I saw Ryan Karl surrounded by 3 LSU receivers and not another Vol in sight. If they were playing zone, Ryan Karl was being asked to cover the the middle third of the end zone by himself.

You would have thought calling a timeout before that play might have been a good idea.

I agree we had all 3 left right? why not call one and give the boys a little slug of water and a chance to catch their breath, it's a game of inches but 2 not 1 but 2 LSU wr's were wide open by at least a 1/2 a mile.

It is hard to say what you would do in that type of situation. Calling a timeout would have given our defense time to regroup, but it would have also given LSU time to draw up a play to score. I probably would have called a time out.

Yea, I am surprised Fulmer has not gotten any heat about not using a single timeout during any of that scenario.

Well, our defense had trouble all night. Lsu punted...twice? It was either a turnover or a score.

Dont forget time of possession. Lsu had the ball for over FORTY MINUTES. I would imagine our secondary was tired from running around ALL day. Lsu had the ball for almost the entire 3rd quarter. And those deep bombs that Crompton threw put our defense right back on the field. If Ainge plays the whole game I imagine ToP would have been a little closer to even.

Im not saying its ok they got lit up, especially since our secondary has been strong this year. But I cant entirely blame them considering they were on the field for over 2/3s of the game.

I think he had to be hoping that Arkansas would either get sacked or brought down in bounds one more time to force them into burning their final timeout and kicking a FG.

One thing nobody is talking about is how lucky it was for LSU that Russell happened to step out of bounds as he dove for the endzone on the 2nd to last play. He didn't quite get into the endzone, which would have meant that a couple more seconds would have run off and they would have been forced to call their final timeout and either kick a FG or make a do or die attempt for the TD on the last play.

Was it really 4th and 8 for LSU? I thought it was 3rd and 8. Wouldn't a FG have tied it?

It was 4th and 8 earlier on in the drive when they converted a 1st down. The winning TD came on 3rd down I think.

You are correct. We had LSU 4th and 8 at around the 37 and they gained 9 yards. They they scored from about 6-7 yards out on 3rd down.

The last TD was a mix up, according to Mayo:

Major Mix-Up: Sophomore linebacker Jerod Mayo said a mix-up on UT's final defensive play allowed LSU to post the winning score in a 28-24 loss.

Mayo said there was supposed to be more pressure applied to LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

The Tigers scored with nine seconds left on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Russell to receiver Early Doucet.

"Some of the people in coverage weren't supposed to be in coverage," Mayo said. "(Defensive coordinator) Coach (John) Chavis, he knew what they were going to run. We just didn't execute on the field."

Good news! We only lose Stewart (big whoop), Wade, Mitchell, and McBride from the starting 11. Yeah, 3 of the 4 are good players, but a nice core will be returning and Fellows will be back.
