I am stunned by the lunacy of our governments at all levels. The most ludicrous acts invariably arise from our glorious Federal Government. The lastest is that our government is actively hunting the burgeoning deer population in Washington, DC. Poor Bambi.

"WASHINGTON D. C.—For more than a decade, the U.S. government has been waging a secretive campaign against restive local insurgents, deploying a team of highly-trained specialists with license to kill.

The location: a marquee park in the U.S. capital. The target: white-tailed deer.
The rapidly multiplying deer are gobbling up the native vegetation in Rock Creek Park, a onetime stomping ground for Teddy Roosevelt that spans much of the city’s northwest. For U.S. Department of Agriculture sharpshooters, who strike at night using silenced weapons, the mission is to control the population and protect young plants from too many hungry deer. ...

“We’ve gone from what was a marginal to good deer habitat and ratcheted that up to a fantastic deer habitat,” said Earl Hodnett, a former wildlife biologist at the Agriculture Department. “There’s no predators, limited hunting pressure and all the food they can possibly eat. The population just takes off in response to that.

"Snipers from the county police’s SWAT force would ride in the bed of a pickup truck as Hodnett slowly trawled through a county park, scanning for deer with heat-sensing equipment. They once recorded 44 confirmed kills in a night."

They thought about administering drugs to female does to sterilize them. They even considered condoms for the bucks.

I thought it was illegal to use lights and electronic means to hunt deer. Have they thought of salt licks?

I know plenty of guys from East Tennessee who could take care of the problem. But the leftists cry about killing Bambi.

When I was stationed at Ft Campbell the deer population on main post was terrible so what did the Army do? Spent 10s if not 100s of thousands of dollars to bring in professional hunters to thin out the herd. Never did understand that when you have trained snipers from 5th Group and the 6 Infantry battalions that would have gladly done the job.

What would be your solution? If you don't manage a herd that has no natural predators they will overpopulate and become diseased, distressed and or cause damage as these are evidently doing.

Surprised there hasn’t been an uprising from the do gooder moms in Chevy Chase, Cleveland Park, and Van Ness. This seems like something they’d be all over.

allow private hunters to use the land. give them some tag/bounty system. set some requirements, silencers, maybe a special license/permit if this is a urban area, tags etc. the permit/license would also cover transportation/processing outside the area. charge them some nominal fee, or require the meat get donated to some approved Welfare program.

Rock Creek Park is about 3 miles long and varies from about 1/2 to 1 1/2 miles wide with a golf course, tennis courts, picnic areas, nature and horse riding trails. it is heavily populated on all four sides. I don't know if you would want to turn people loose in there with high powered rifles. You might could restrict it to bow hunting though. They could even organize field trips and let elementary students watch some old guy field dress a deer.

Well, while we all go back and forth on stupid stuff that has very easy, logical solutions, the .gov just went a step further in putting us all in economic prison as the US just crossed the $34 Trillion threshold in national debt. All hail the .gov! All hail the ever eroding dollar!

Because animal control is not the job of our military. You don't do something just because you're capable of doing it,

I suggest sending 87,000 newly trained IRS agents to Rock Creek Park for On the job training. Bring in hunters and pay them using a point system, each point is worth a dollar. For every deer a hunter gets, he receives 1,000 points. For every IRS agent bagged and tagged, the hunter receives 10,000 points. That would be killing two birds with one stone.

Landscaping, painting rocks, humanitarian missions, disaster relief, drug interdiction ext and ext are not the job of the military but they do them because they are capable of doing it.
