Question VN. I don't post a ton but read alot. Do we attribute our improving recruiting class to just our "recruiters" (coaches, recruits etc.) or is the fact that the team really seems to be buying into DD's philosophies playing a bigger role? Just something I was kind of wondering.

Having witnessed the SF Giants do their thing first hand living in the bay area, there's something to be said about chemistry. I've read where our current class of jr's & sr's have said they want to be remembered for bringing this program back to where we belong. It's just funny how good news is coming in on the recruiting front the same time that the team seems to be coming together and having fun.

I have no idea what's going on in a kid's mind when he's being recruited, but a team getting along and having fun like these guys seem to be having lately has to be a positive influence on anyone coming in on a visit.

Yeah i suppose the answer is all of the above. Was just pleasantly suprised at the way this class is starting to shape up recently. All coinciding with the team starting to gel together, regardless of our competition. (Sorry for not adding that in earlier) :fool:

Braves should have beat the dang Giants.......

But for real, winning helps a lot, although I really feel like Dooley is creating a great permanent atmosphere for student athletes to flourish in every aspect of their life.... and recruits can see that.

:good!: Great answer!

side note, nothing was going to stop that train, you could just feel it. Felt bad for Conrad though. To be put in that situation was just brutal.

I remember back in like 86 we were 0-6. Think we have it rough this year, that was the worst by far. We went to Memphis, my hometown, and we were cheering "1 and 6" before the game. We won big, so your statement kinda reminded me of that day. Thanks for bringing it up.

and their moms, dads, and, in some cases, their grandmothers can too. I think the VFL program is gonna do wonders in recruiting when the decision lies partly with the family.

Sure am glad we got Dan Uggla though, but I'm kinda concerned about him only being there a year. Hope they sign him long term, cause they traded away two really good players to get him.

on topic: I always believed we would pull a top 15 class, but the way recruiting is going 11th or 12th seems very feasible

I think that our late start recruiting caused the slow start, for the most part. 4 and 5 star guys seem to commit very early or very late - there's relatively few that commit between, say April and October/November. If they don't have a clear leader/favorite/lifelong dream team, they generally commit from Nov/Dec-NSD. Reason is that they are highly sought-after and they have the luxury of waiting until they are sure - there will be a spot for them most anywhere, even late.

3 stars commit sooner. They know that if they wait until February, the ship has sailed for them, at least at the better schools.

So, I think the pattern is pretty logical. We didn't do much of anything for this class until after NSD, for obvious reasons. Many 4 and 5 star guys already were comitted by then, or are just now starting to commit. So, we tried to get commitments from the 3 star guys that we think can play and are at need position and in the meantime, develop relationships with the 4/5* guys.

But, I will say that our newfound success is bound to be helpful for guys who are considering us. I think it's very likely that we get more top guys if we win out and finish 7-6 at a bowl than if we instead finished 4-8 or something. With that said, I don't think the recent success had anything to do with Couch and think it had very little to do with Arnett, though.

It can't hurt for recurits to look and see freshman QB throwing to Freshman WR, with Fresman OL blocking for them. Recruits know that if the come to TN they can play early.

And now these freshmen are winning. That means recruits see they can play early and be part of building something big.

I feel good that our staff seems to be doing it the right way.
