Here is how our game vs. SC stacks up against the season performance of each team statistically.
Rushing Offense
We ran for 146 while SC has allowed 143. We are averaging 201 per game.
Passing Offense
Pass efficiency rating for Vols of 109.8...SC was allowing 139.6. Our season avg is 109.6.
Rushing D
We allowed 218 while SC was averaging 225. On the season, we allow 182.
Pass Efficiency D
SC was held to a 103.0 while we have allowed 118.1 on the season. SC was averaging 153.8 coming in.
Some points...in most categories, we showed a modest improvement over what might be expected. For instance, Worley was marginally better than the season average in passing (which of course includes Austin Peay along with UF, etc). We ran for 3 more yards than SC has been allowing. We held them 7 yards below their season rush average.
In all those categories...modest improvement..."good enough" might describe it.
But in Pass D, we excelled ourselves. We held Shaw an eye-popping SIXTY RATING POINTS below his season average. (Shaw's rating for the season is 163...the number above of 153.8 is the TEAM AVERAGE and so includes the backup's numbers). And did you know we start a true Frosh at CB? And I just realized that SS Randolph is only a soph RS. Man the future is bright for our defensive backfield!
I think pressure also played a key role. We were all over Connor Shaw all day. For the year, we average 1.78 sacks per game, but had four yesterday.
It's very encouraging that our D is playing this well after the catastrophe of last year.
