When we get out of state students to come to ut don't we get more $$ than when we get in state students? Is this a reason why we go for the out of state recruits?

Not being a smart @$$ but I thought we got more out of state athletes because TN isn't stacked with talent like other states. Interesting question though. Ok guys I'm off to work!

Academic students, yes. However student athletes don't pay tuition so it's irrelevant where they come from.

I keep hearing people say this so obviously they don't know how sports works.

Actually, whether the students are athletes or not. In-state students are partially subsidized by the state. A good way to think of it is to say that the out of state tuition is the true tuition and the state pays for some of that for in state students.

In regards to athletes, since the state does not help pay for the out of state athletes, their scholarships cost the University/ Athletic more money.

Short answer: No, out of state athletes are more expensive.

Yep....which is why the VASF is so important. For those that don't know, the S and F stand for Scholarship Fund. It is free for the athletes, but somebody has to pay the University for their education. It's not like the University is granting us 85 tuition waivers a year.

I wonder if it is less that TN is lacking in natural talent and more that, unlike other states around, for the last several years no home team has been pursuing or inculcating home talent.
