Well, it looks like the writing is essentially on the wall. Overtime Elite, a professional basketball developmental league has started signing some of the top high school basketball stars including HS junior Jalen Lewis, a top 10 talent. All the top basketball stars will eventually start signing with Overtime Elite instead of going to college. In all honesty, why would a top HS player not sign with Overtime Elite if their intent is to play professional basketball. Overtime Elite will pay the players good money, give them insurance and also prepare them specifically for the NBA including not only playing skills but also how to market themselves and build their brand. Plus they will give them tuition if they do not make it to the NBA. NCAA basketball will eventually just be a watered down league.

Fine with me. I’d rather see college students playing basketball.

What happens when overtime elite runs out of money?

Good. Sounds like a minor league for basketball. I have no problem with the minor league for baseball and this might be similar.

NBA G league can now sign kids out of high school. The G league does not have the same contract restrictions as the parent NBA teams and is set up to be a minor league system.
Elite minimum contract is $100,000. They will also pay up to $100,000 toward college.
Minimum G league contract is $125,000.
An excellent player now has options if they are not interested or have the aptitude for college.
Sounds ok to me.

See minor league baseball.
Players are not even making enough money to live on.
Operations conditions are as bad as a broke high school program.
Without big gates and TV money, overtime will fail.
Top players can make more money playing for a college in a one and done.
It is the same reason football has no straight from high school minor league
Without NFL subsidies. , it never will.

MLB even had to totally revamp MiLB and eliminate a number of teams just to make it sort of sustainable.

I don’t see how overtime elite can market and sell their products to generate sustainable ratings to survive. I like the idea, but I don’t see myself interested enough to watch.

With NIL, I don't see OE being that big of a threat.

And how are they funding this? Magic money? Unless they have money coming in, they’ll go bankrupt. No way people are going to pay to see this without any team brand or identity.

Exactly. I’d say there will be several more minor league teams collapse.

Where the heck are these guys getting the money?

Minor league teams will definitely start collapsing around the country. Idk if my local one will stick around much longer either simply because more people are interested in Clemson or USC baseball than the Greenville Drive. Especially since they’re a Red Sox affiliate. The Greenville Braves were a better product, but the stadium was falling apart.
They’ve been trying this in football for decades. USFL, XFL, Arena Football, etc. it’s expensive but not crazy to start up. It’s next to impossible to sustain.
Arena football was awesome and ran forever. It was a unique idea. The video game was fun too, but aged horribly.

Ran forever, but not profitably

I think elite will struggle.
The NBA G league has been around for about 20 years and just recently started allowing players to come in straight from high school. I think it will continue. It is a great place for injured players to rehab or your young players to develop against excellent competition.
Minor league baseball will stick around but it was time for the teams to cut back. I think some of the teams had as many as 6 minor league team affiliates.

arena ball was so fun to watch live. No game was a W till the clock hit 0:00. Anything could happen

And we have a guy who wants to take tax payer money and build a minor league stadium in Knoxville.

Good, I am tired on the one and done players. They don't even attend classes in most cases, just there to grab a buck for the school. May as well be playing pro. Seems the money, combined with the desire to win championships, is killing basketball. NBA numbers have tanked and college basketball will follow now that players will be paid. I don't disagree with them getting paid but it will be the end of college basketball.
