1. I do not want to hear people make the stupid argument that pressing teams cannot win. Nolan Richardson and Rick Pitino think that is hilarious.

2. I do not believe that if Martin coaches like a Gene Keady Purdue team that it will be as painful and disgusting offensively as the Kevin O'Neill teams that made me sad even when we won.

With those caveats, I was expecting a similar pace to the Vols of this year, rather than say the Vols of 3 seasons ago, when I thought about Coach Martin taking over. Then I heard Wesley Washpun in an interview talking about pressing next year and Tennessee being an up tempo team.

I do not think Wes was uncertain about the plans for Coach Martin or that the coach told him something he did not plan on.

When you have slow point guards and a slow and fat center, you cannot be a running and pressing team.

When you have long and quick and fast defenders, it makes sense to press sometimes.

I am assuming that Hopson is leaving, because he is dreaming of the NBA and because Coach Martin said you will play hard defense or sit.

A roster with:

Chris Jones PG Memphis (Tenn.), NC 5'10" 180

Josh Richardson SG Edmond, OK 6'5" 180

Wes Washpun PG Cedar Rapids, IA 6'1" 170

joining

11 Trae Golden G 6-1 207 So. HS Powder Springs, Ga. (McEachern HS)

20 Kenny Hall F 6-8 215 Jr. 1L Stone Mountain Ga. (Redan HS)

12 Tobias Harris F 6-8 226 So. HS Dix Hills, N.Y. (Half Hollow Hills West HS)

34 Jeronne Maymon F 6-7 258 Jr. Tr. Madison, Wisc. (Marquette University)

13 Skylar McBee G 6-3 184 Jr. 1L Rutledge, Tenn. (Grainger HS)

1 Jordan McRae G 6-6 173 So. HS Midway, Ga. (Liberty County HS)

23 Cameron Tatum G 6-6 192 Sr 2L Lithonia, Ga. (The Patterson School)

0 Renaldo Woolridge F 6-9 212 Sr. 2L Sherman Oaks, Calif. (Harvard-Westlake HS)

Would seem to me to indicate a group that will play as 3 guards and 2 forwards with no center.

I think the comments of Washpun also indicate something beautiful, that Coach Martin will adjust his style of play to his personnel available.

A team that wins 24 games next year that plays really hard defense and that shows discipline in running half court offense well will be a delight to watch next year. And yes, I still want to see great dunks, and I would expect plenty from a running team that presses and steals.

Good presentation. I will agree with a lot of your view. I also honestly think that Coach Zo will have a ton of words with Hall and that Hall will actually get some decent minutes next year...

I personally think that Hall will be the most affected from Coach Zo.

After watching the Bruce Pearl halfcourt offense, I'll take anything that resembles running an offensive set.

I saw an interview, where he said that he had a style that he would want to run. When asked if he would recruit players to fit his style. He said that obviously he would want players that would mesh well with his style, but that he was going to try and recruit the best talent available. If that means he will have to change his style he would.

Not to hijack the thread but Coach Zo was in the Bookstore signing autographs before the OW game. Nice guy to talk to.

I thought Mike Hamilton had already been fired.

More players can handle the ball more for elite teams. You have 3's and 4's that were guards in HS and can handle the ball when the pg is pinched or tired. There aren't many 5'9 pg's anymore to trap, and players are generally longer at every position. Pressing teams can pick their spots, but an all game, full court pressing team isn't going to win consistently.

Also, I don't care what kind of style we run, as long as we win games and have success in the tourney, I'm good.

I think we need the NBA shotclock, it would def. help with some of the snooze fests we have in college basketball. I'm all for having a gameplan that might prefer a slower pace, but shotclock is too long.

Also, make these young men declare out of HS, or stay 3 years. I am all for a kid making $$$, I work for it every day....but the college game would have much better quality with better players [insert captain obvious picture].

Just my random two cents.

One of the most successful coaches in the state told me the other day: "post-season basketball is about half-court defense and half-court offense."

You can play with a fast paced tempo and pressure D without pressing full court or the entire game.

Agree with all of the above. Foxsports article about the team I read talked about putting cutting in place on an offense in a way that was a pretty strong indictment of Pearl.

I think a big reason this rings so true is when you are playing in, say the SEC tourney and could potentially play 4 games in 4 days and when you are pressing the entirity, you are going to have to take plays off unless you can legitimately go 11 deep without losing anything. Your players get worn out, and no amount of ice is going to change dead legs in a tourney environment. You have to play tough D, and execute in the half court or you WILL exit early.
