Anybody else hear his criticism of NFL playoff teams for resting players during meaningless Week 17 games? He talked as if it's something new (and specifically targeted Gruden). They've been doing that for as long as I remember. And, he compared that to Villanova's title run. Yeah, Billy, Villanova brought it to the table every game during its 1985 NCAA Tournament run, just as the NFL will bring it to the table in the playoffs. What an idiot.

Billy Packer said that Larry Bird would never make it in the NBA, so that tells you all you need to know about him.

If not for Al McGuire, Billy Packer never gets out of the 1970's as a basketball commentator. McGuire made him look like he has some sense. (By that I mean that McGuire carried him.)

I heard the little rant. He was (and usually is) completely wrong in his assessment; I especially liked how he used Villanova, who was playing in a single elimination tournament, as a comparative for the Bucs resting starters in a meaningless game.

My biggest issue, however, was the fact that he thought it was his place to stand on his stump and opine against a coach in another sport. I thought his job was to provide color and randomly yell catch phrases in a weirdly gruff inflection during college basketball games, not to evaluate or denegrate John Gruden's coaching philosophy. He should really stick to what he does best, or, lacking that, what he is being paid to do.
