Sarah Palin's family used to "hustle" across the Canadian border to get healthcare, the former Alaska governor said this weekend.

In a speech in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Palin called it "ironic" that while growing up in a small Alaskan town near the Canadian border, her family used to sneak across the border to take advantage of the Canadian healthcare system.

"We used to hustle over the border for healthcare we received in Canada," she said, according to Medicine Hat News (via Dave Weigel.) "And I think now, 'Isn't that ironic?' "

At least she's honest about it.

If Palin wins the nomination in 2012 it will be death for the GOP.

I think the operative phrase here is, "while growing up in a small Alaskan town near the border".

This isn't any kind of indictment of Sarah the adult, but rather of her parents while she was a child.

When you live on the Canadian border in Alaska, it means you are in the middle of nowhere. Not a lot of options for health care. If the system is set up like Canada's, that is what is going to happen.

Yes it is.

If she was honest in the least she would have told the Canadians what she thinks about their healthcare so that it agrees with what she says to American audiences. Instead, she put it in the context of it was good enough for her family when she was growing up. I won't hold my breath for her to say that to her tea party crowd.

"Ironic" isn't the word she's looking for here, it's "hypocrisy".

I'm sure that Sarah the child had a say in where her parents took her for medical care.

By good enough I'm sure you meant "FREE" health care at no cost to her folks which means the Canadian tax payers foot the bill. Not ironic or hypocrisy but exactly the point the Rep's are making. Nice health care system free to all those but the one's paying the taxes.

the Ben Smith article blows away the spin that started this thread; particularly the part about the Yukon not being under the socialized plan at the time these events occurred.

I still wish I'd never hear the name Palin anymore.

I sure hope we can do better than what we have now and Sarah Palin. Is there not a person worthy of running our country? Is this the best America has to offer: Obama or Palin?

This country is in worse shape than I thought.

None of the Palin defending changes the context of what was said or how it was said.

I say again, anyone want to bet she says the same thing at a tea party event? Hypocrisy still applies here.
