You want to know how close this team is to being great? Look no further than tonight's performance. Now I know many of you are saying "What the hell is this guy talking about?" I'll explain.

The margin is so thin right now. Think about this, at it's base the defense gave up 27 points to OU, that's pretty damn good but if that fumble goes our way it's only 20 points. This defense is legit and the best part is they are only going to get better. Hell the defense only gave up 7 points in the second half and they swarmed to the ball all night long. The stat line might not reflect it, but the defense kept OU's offense in check. AJ Johnson and Cam Sutton are freaking studs, this defense is going to give us a chance to win some games this year.

Oh the offense, my goodness the offense. Jalen Hurd is going to be special. Anyone criticizing Justin Worley needs to check their head, he played about as well as could be expected given he was running for his life all night. Which brings me to that o-line, it's ugly but honestly, it's what I expected to see from them. Look y'all, they're green, like super green, but the good news is that's probably the best D-line we are going to face outside of Alabama for the rest of the year. So much went wrong for them and I feel for them but consider the fact that there is now a mountain of film with which to work and rest assured, this line WILL get better.

So what about that paper thin margin? Well, the defense only gave up 27 points and pretty much shut OU's offense down in the second half. Imagine if the offense was actually more experienced, Worley doesn't get sacked 4 times and he doesn't spend the evening running from OU d-linemen. If Worley isn't getting as much pressure that means he has more time to deliver the ball, which means the offense probably gets those two TDs, that would have made it a 27-24 game late in the 4th. That's how thin the margin is folks to this team being competitive at a high level. Which brings me to my final point.

The crux of the issue is that this team is really young and really inexperienced and that isn't a recipe for winning games like this. Trust me, I want to win now just as much as anyone but the hard truth is, the past two head coaching regimes left this team in shambles. That's not an excuse, it's just the truth and cleaning the mess up and rebuilding are going to take time. The future is very bright and I would bet by year's end this team will be VERY dangerous.

I'm with the OP. We had a chance. We were within striking distance towards the end of the game. Had we scored after either of Hurd's big runs and not thrown the pick 6, the game is pretty tight in the 4th.

Being in the game late against a very good team is something we never had with Dooley. I'm excited to see this team against Florida, Georgia, Mizzou and USC. I think we may pull one or two upsets.

We will be really good as a program very soon.. Just look at the depth chart and tells you a story...

We only loose 2 players next year in which their replacement will be considered a drop off.

Worley
Johnson

You got to believe we will better at DT for Williams
Better at CB for Coleman
Better at RB for Lane.. Already seeing that
Better at KR- DY is well DY

The whole point of my post is to show objectively that youth and inexperience is what is going to hold this team back. That's the truth of the matter, no amount of great play calling is going to compensate for a greener than goose s*** offensive line. What should be encouraging though, as bad as they played last night, the o-line didn't commit a lot of penalties, that tells you that they are at least disciplined and that's a good start.

If nothing else, last night's game showed our true freshmen what they CAN be if they want to be. To be the best, you have to beat the best. We may not have beaten them, but we played them hard.
