That old problem on defense reared it's head again.

We went back to giving a big cushion and running zone. Our defenders, especially the linebackers, looked totally lost in pass coverage. I counted maybe 8 or 9 busted coverages last night. We couldn't switch in zone coverage to save our lives, leaving their receivers wide open all night long.

And then, when we did go into man coverage our all-american corner never played the football.

It's almost like we have a coaching problem with the pass coverage. On paper, our personnel is more talented, but we still have the same issues. 3rd and Banks they are gonna convert with a deep pass over the middle you can take it to the bank!

Agree, barney.

The defense has two problems. One, the defensive backs can't cover to save their souls. Two, pass rush wasn't getting to the opposing QB, which alleviates some of the pressure on the defensive backfield. And the zone scheme is good against some offensive attacks, but not against what Arkansas was playing. The Vols coaching staff let their players down by not adjusting the scheme.

Petrino coached circles around Banks. It was an embarrassment.

Their QB threw at least a couple of dimes when the receiver was well covered. Not much anyone can do about those.
That is true, ntxVOL, but not the story of the whole game. The story for the whole game was poor coaching/gameplanning, no pass rush, inept defenders covering downfield, and an offense thinking they were running a 40 yard dash when their defense was on the ropes early (which goes back to coaching).

He threw more than a couple. They made the plays. We didn’t. Our DB’s wasn’t the reason
We lost. Arkansas was!

Defense definitively had some issues but did enough to win this game if the offense did anything at all.
I disagree, Chad. The score could have and probably should have been worse but Arkansas had some issues of their own.
I still think it boils down to game planning, play calling, and adjustments. Tennessee's was all wrong yesterday. Every facet was wrong.

The story of the game is that until we start to open the field and use the middle like we use to this offense is not going to work. OL grow a set of balls and block somebody Our QB can not wait for 5 second routes when he gets 2 seconds to throw. They got pressure with 3 last night against 5 and a back. Wtf is that ? Grow some balls or sit them and let the young guys play. GE needs yo do his friend a favor and retire

All of that is exactly right, Big Al, but it all also goes back to coaching and coaching to visibly recognize when certain players aren't getting the job done.
Players have to execute, but when the coach isn't pulling players who aren't performing up to task, then the fault lies with the coaching.
And time management was 100% coaching. That was a pathetic display of needing to milk the clock to squeak out a win. Heupel's lack of clock recognition and what to do turned a very possible win into a loss.

I agree. I touched on these subjects in some other posts but yeah I agree with everything you said.

CJH has proven that he isn't a good game day coach. Time management is just pitiful and the big time lack of discipline among the teams can only speak of ineffective coaching. This loss lands directly at the feet of the coaching staff.

The 342nd concern that I see is this O-Line has been bad for longer than I can remember and we’re in year 4 and we still have the same issues and personnel problems that we had in year 1. Somebody is dropping the ball here no pun intended

Tennessee had better skill players. I doubt many would disagree. The recruiting history would bear that out. But Arkansas had the better team last night, or possibly any other night. Their defensive line dominated even when outnumbered. Jackson intimidated our OLine by himself. And the Hog QB Greene was just nimble enough to sustain drives and move the sticks keeping the ball away from our offense, who would quickly give it right back. We had 2 scoring drives the entire night. No turnover but just couldn't sustain drives.

Only way to stop that is more pressure on qb. I agree there were a few plays we covered the receiver as well as you could have without pi
