passing game: Vols lead the nation in long plays, yards per attempt

In just 1.5 seasons under Heupel (20 games), UT has had more pass plays for 40+ yards (36) than in the previous 4 seasons combined (35 in 47 games).


For the period 2000-2020, our highest yards-per-attempt average was 8.3 (2001 and 2006). Last year, we averaged 8.9 and this year, we've obviously ascended to another level entirely.

We're also averaging 7.51 yards per offensive play. Our highest averages from 2000-2021: 6.47 (2021) and 6.44 (2016).

That's what I love about this attack. It isn't the short controlled passing game of west coast and air raid teams. Rather it's more aggressive and more downfield.
