State lawmakers in country music’s capital have passed a groundbreaking measure that would make it a crime to use a friend’s login — even with permission — to listen to songs or watch movies from services such as Netflix and Rhapsody.

The legislation was aimed at hackers and thieves who sell passwords in bulk, but its sponsors acknowledge it could be employed against people who use a friend’s or relative’s subscription.

and I was a little scared that the wife and I sharing an account would get us in trouble until I read this and felt much, much better

While those who share their subscriptions with a spouse or other family members under the same roof almost certainly have nothing to fear,

If the company doesn't want people sharing passwords then it is indeed a violation. I don't have a problem with the law. Stealing is stealing no matter how it's justified.

How will they enforce it? On the honor system?

I would imagine they could do some investigative work with IP addresses. Doesn't prove it but provides evidence.

More likely, they hope the law will be a deterrent to some.

pfft. I have a netflix account. My sister at Vanderbilt uses it. I use it at UTK. My mom and dad use it in West TN. My good friend in grad school at Rutgers uses it...

Good luck with that enforcement. Its just like another stupid law that doesn't have the legs to be enforced seriously "Texting while driving". Apparently they have SUVs(?) that will be checking in on drivers from a height advantage to see what they are doing on their phone...

annoying government.

I have Netflix & use it on my iPhone, laptop, & ps3. How on earth can they police this. I read an article where people were advertising user names & passwords so I assume that would be the only way.

You're pretty misguided here. You're stealing and its the government bothering you?

And if you text and drive you're a retard.

am I stealing if my wife and I use the same account (under her email)? She uses it while traveling and I use it at home. I'm sure an IP check would put us on the list

if they're going to do that, then they need to make it a law not to share dvd's or cd's or 8-tracks. it's the same concept, just easier to do.

Exactly. It blows my mind how stupid this is from what I've read. But, I don't think it really means much. It's just another charge if they arrest someone selling private info inside TN. Sharing an account with your folks, etc will not be affected.

The company with the site is where the liability needs to be placed. We don't need the government enforcing and essentially doing part of their work. If Netflix (or XX company) doesn't allow sharing, they need to tighten the way they do security. But, I don't think it's going to be used that way. Just another charge to use when they catch hacker rings or groups selling hacked accounts or private information.

Couldn't netflix just restrict the Password to one or two specific IP addresses only, such as laptop and home computer system?

I'm not a computer guru at all...not sure if that is possible.

I want to know how they can prove it. The account holder could sign in on any computer they please, so it's not like it would be too incriminating if they caught logins with multiple IP's. Perhaps they could trace it if someone is claiming identity theft?

You can stream Netflix with an iPhone, iPad, other smartphones, various game consoles, some bluray players, Internet capable tvs, laptops, & pc's. It's not possible to police this unless you're just an idiot advertising it. If they start limiting devices or whatever they are subject to lose customers & it's just not worth it.

I agree that if they started limiting legitimate users to one or two devices then subscriptions would start to fall off.

When I originally signed up on iTunes, I paid for a download of the Boise St./OK Fiesta Bowl game. Only afterwards did I realize that I could only play it on the itunes browser (terrible and small) and couldn't burn a copy to disc. Basically I could only watch it on a small screen on this one computer.

I haven't downloaded anything else from iTunes since. Too inconvenient. Service may be better now, I don't know, but they ruined me with that initial experience.

Limiting usage on netflix would lose a ton of people. Heck, I'll watch on my comp when batch editing or rendering.
