I found it very interesting that UT is 11th in signing 4 star players and tied for 3rd in signing 5 star players, yet they haven't won a single conference championship or national championship during that time frame. Coaching????

could be or could be the over all talent of the in conference teams ahead of them are better players. Also, would need to factor in attrition...

except for AUburn, conference winners all had higher percent of talent

could be combo, talent and coaching. ultimately, coaching responsible and we saw result of that November 3rd

I agree the over all talent of the conference teams ahead of them more than likely played a part in it. Obviously coaching did too.

I noticed Auburn as well. They won the SEC Championship in '04 and could have possibly won the NC if they were given the chance and they ranked 14th on this list for both 4 and 5 star players. That's pretty impressive.

This is an interesting list. Thanks for posting.

kinda interesting

A little more then kinda

We signed 17 5 star kid and have goose egg to show for it. Almost 50% of the kids we signed were 4-5 stars

Meanwhile the gators signed 5 more 5 stars then us and 17 more 4 stars then us and have 2 NC to show for it

It also shows the kids coming from Louisiana are underrated

We have been extremely unlucky with high profile players this century. Some of it may have been coaching, but just as many if not more didn't make it due to some fault of their own.

BTW, glad to see you didn't abandon us now that you are back on GQ Larry.

this^

of the 17 5 star players we have signed, none have been great, aside from the obvious exception (Berry) and one year of Robert Meachem...maybe Mahelona

Riggs was solid for a year, but not amazing...same for Banks

hopefully Martin (and less likely, Donald) can live up to the hype this year...

I think the coaching has been bad, more so than being unlucky. Also, maybe that shows that Fulmer and his staff were not good at evaluating players.

Fulmer has had trouble "coaching up" talent the last 10 years. Maybe he wasn't unlucky with players like Riggs, Banks, Chris Donald, etc. Maybe he was just LUCKY with players like Eric Berry and Meachem....

Dude they should have done a lot more here. Especially Riggs, wish he would have left after his Junior year. Do you guys remember Jabari Davis and Derrick Tinsley. Pretty good talents that should have lit it up.

it always seemed to me that UT signed an inordinate amount of 4 and 5 star busts

I'm very excited about the staff. Best recruiting staff ever put together that I've seen. Plus, they are a bunch of really good coaches.

Having said that, I fully expected this recruiting class to be a struggle. Huge need for lineman and quarterbacks. Unfortunately, from all reports this QB class is the worst in over 20 years from a talent standpoint. None are considered elite at this point. Maybe by December one or two emerge as elite but that is a very small pool for top programs to go after.

2009 class turned out far better than I could have imagined but I think these guys recruiting prowess will be felt in 2011 class. Orgeron told me in February they were a good 8 months behind other schools on relationships with recruits for 2010. They will be even with everyone on 2011 class

lot depends on how one defines a bust:

Based on my data (which not sure when I last updated this so could be off some), from the 2002-2008 signing classes:

Florida had 21 players in those categories that either were dismissed, transferred, never qualified or quit playing football.

Tennessee had 19 from those same classes..

I think Orgeron was there checking out Irvin and some other players. Saw him working out and asked for tape. I believe that is way it happened..

Nice data.

Looks like you need about half or more of your recruits to be 4/5 stars to feel decent about your efforts.

What's your take LWS?

to win a league championship in the SEC, Big 10, Big 12 or PAC 10, your chances are much better if you can get around the 50% mark fo 4-5 stars recruits. With level we have had last few years, we would have been the king of Big East and possibly the ACC.

Holbert? From what I remember, he got hurt in a scrimmage before his 5th year season and then just never played his 5th season. I think his knee was pretty messed up.
