It has been awhile since I've looked at those classes. It's amazing how many 5* and 4* BUSTS we've had over that last few years. In addition, many of our best current players were not highly recruited at all. Is this an aberration or typical of other programs?

Fulmer's classes usually produced 12-15 contributors over a 4-5 year period. For whatever reason, during the best years, more stayed in the program for the full time. I guess it all comes down to character. Whenever you are losing close to 50% of your recruits, evaluations come into question.

BUT look at all the "can't miss players" that we've signed but are either not here anymore or have just not panned out. We have some high rated players sitting on the bench or have moved on because they were passed on the depth chart by lower rated players.

Count up all the ones from the 07 class that are gone. Crazy. I counted 17 (not including the JC transfers).

I think the lax attitude of many on Fulmer's coaching staff also played a big part in player defections, off-field problems, player development etc in his latter years... I think a lot of Fulmer's buddies on staff really were coasting along in their jobs during their final years at Tennessee. Not sure the players had a lot of respect for those guys.

JerQuari Schofield is from Aiken, SC. It has him from Murfreesboro. A few discrepancies in here, but pretty cool to look back on.

Kevin Burnett was a 1 star. Wow. I didn't know that rated below a 2. Also, I didn't realize we had 8 - 5 star recruits in 2002. Not sure how accurate that is, since James Wilhoit was a 5 star. I didn't think kickers were ever ranked that high.

Nuke, Mike Edwards, Darren Myles and Bryce Brown.

For all the Kiffin lover's, his class is falling apart. Nuke, Edwards was on his watch. Myles might still be here if Kiffin was still coach but would probably just be a ticking time bomb and eventually get let go and BB would be requiring a shrink every day to remind him of how to be a man.

This is why character can matter. If Nuke, Edwards, Myles, and Brown had character they'd still be here and helping our team. Myles leaving will hurt. He played at a postion of need this year and might have been a starter. Kiffin's class is starting to look like CPF's last class.

I hop it doesn't end up unfolding like the 2007 class. That class still amazes me. There are very few left from the class still on the team.

This is very typical... I was reading about the top players in College and in the NFL on a report done on either SI or ESPN, Most of the players making it big now were like 3 star recruits in high school.

I think it said Mark Ingram was only a 3 star, and not even in the top 100 backs.

You can only trust the scouts so much, I wonder sometimes if these ratings guys get in HS are because money exchanged hands or something...

Maybe if nobody ever blows smoke up your arse and you come out of high school as a nobody then you want it more and you try harder to prove yourself, the old Underdog mentality.

Whereas, if you are made to be this great athelete even before you are out of HS then you dont try to improve because you think u are already the best.

Look whats happening to Haynesworth, He got paid the big bucks, told he was the best ever, now the guy can even pass his physicals to get on the field for the Redskins.

I think we should just stick with recruiting 2 and 3 * athletes. How bout ya'll? Looks like the verdict is in. Tennessee cannot hang on to 4 and 5 * players to make it worthwhile. Let Bama and Florida have all the 4 and 5 * athletes.

That's OK. Don't worry about whether a kid has class or character.... just sign the ones with the most stars.

Hopefully when they grade our class this year they will use a weighted scale similar to optional schools with advanced classes. In calculating our R.S.A.(Recruit Star Average-similar to the G.P.A.) we would get a 1 star bonus per player. Since we have all 3*'s they would be upgraded to 4*'s on the weighted scale and we would have a top ten class again.
